There are also "burner" lvl 4 missions, which are done in assault frigates. These are great, but you either need a fleet ot different assault frigs for each type of these missions (around 10 different missions), OR a single ship with different fits for each mission (Nergal - it can do all of them, but slower than assault frigates specialized for the particular mission).
it doesn't quite work so well with two gun boats because of the time it takes to manually lock things on both ships and the need to keep tabbing to press f1. so like the alternative shield combo, a golem and say, a nighthawk could work but you spend a lot of the time tabbing back and forth and locking targets. its clunky and doesn't work as well as having a drone boat as a second ship, not to mention you can make curators shoot out to 100km the same range as the paladin, but a nighthawk/golem are going to be more difficult to match ranges. the golem can easily hit out to 100km with cruise, but a nighthawk probably caps out at around 60-70km. ofc if you have a marauder you don't need a second ship, but if you are pulling missions with two characters then you'll need that second character as a warp in for the missions they pull. it also gives you a second target for ewar, now that marauders have basically no resist, things like tracking disruptors are brutal on the paladin but do nothing to the eos which does all its damage through drones.

this is my mission running combo and I haven't found a better combo.
level 5s would be the pinnacle of solo mission running but all level 5s exist in lowsec/nullsec(npc). so most people don't progress to level 5s as the risk is not really worth the reward, its only really possible to do level 5s if you're part of a group that has a large presence in that space, being that most ppl are blue to you and not trying to constantly scan you down and tackle you. because if you have to constantly bounce out of your sites then you're not making money any faster than you would if you just kept running level 4s and not have to bounce out at all.
As a beginner you want to use the low skill ships like Frigates for Tranquil abyssals for money and skill into Assault Frigates (10 days of training ish) for T1 CALM Abyssals.
Other ships to recommend you look at or get familiar with names;
Gnosis (40mil battlecruiser) 25% damage across the board
Praxis (180mil battleship) 25% damage across the board
This way you won't have to wait for level 4 missiles or level 4 heavy missiles or turrets etc and aren't losing out on DPS.
Level 3 missions can easily be knocked out with the Gnosis, but the Praxis for level 4's you will want at least 300-400 DPS from turrets, possibly level 3-4 in small drones to kill small frigs so your big turrets can hit cruisers/BCs/battleships.
Anyone suggesting 300mil+ ships are giving out bad advice, unless it is the Gila (300mil) and this is so you can clear higher levels of Abyssals EASILY, and arguably the best way to make isk unless you're into Data site hacking or using a 600-1bil fit to blitz level 4 missions.
Please look into joining a null group if you plan to play Eve as your main game before you hop between corps (makes you look like a scammer/spy from the eyes of other big corps).
>lowsec
Yeah, let us know how that went for you.
edit: can be done way cheaper if you only go for missions that are blitzable. some can be done in a cheapish praxis. check out guys like hateless, aceface, highnet, daopa etc on yt to see how that works.
It's great lev 4 miss and wormholing... except the reload for the HAMs... it's also set up passive shield which is not what I'm used to.. correction it was great.. haven't replaced it.. had nearly 2 bil in that .. so workin on some skills :)

I solo level 4s often in a Tengu or high-end battleship, myself.
