PvP with high latency
Is it viable? I'm talking about at least 400ms of ping. Any action I take on EVE it delays up to 3 to 5 seconds. I don't mind much, as it feels as if my order is being executed by the crew, which would take aproximately that amount of time. But I'm wondering, when and if I go to PvP, will that player with, say 30 ms, have an advantage over me?
Just to clarify, I'm talking about ping, latency, lag. Not what this new generation calls "lag", the drop of FPS and stutter and whatnot. It is ever present and inconsistent, and it's the main reason I don't play centralized MMOs.

Thanks

If you get delays of up to 3-5 seconds, yeah, that could actually be pretty bad. It would become very difficult for you to "tackle" someone, because that delay would result in you not being able to prevent them from warping away in time. Generally speaking, the combat itself is slow-paced, but those instances where you have a limited amount of time to react could spell trouble. Are you sure you have delays over 3 seconds? That sounds like a lot for a 400ms ping. I'd be surprised if you didn't get disconnected all the time because of that.

For instance when I double click to move in X direction, by counting I got between 2.5 and 3 seconds. Almost any action delays that much.
I'm playing from Argentina, and I'm not sure but the host server must be somewhere in Euro-Asia, not to mention that it simultaneously hosts over 20k players.
I guess I'll keep on playing the trial to see how it goes, but I'm kind of bummed up already cause I really like the game.

The cluster is located in London, I believe.

Anyways, the EVE server operates on second-long ticks, so even with a good connection, you still feel a degree of latency present. The question is whether or not the delays you're experiencing are significantly longer than those experienced normally. Unless you're using satellite, I don't think it should be an issue for you. As long as your connection is stable and doesn't drop you, an extra second of delay time shouldn't affect your gameplay in all but the most fringe cases. EVE isn't like an fps game, where a few hundred ms of lag can result in no hits being placed. You don't need to aim, or move manually, because the game does all of that for you.

If you double click to move, your ship (both animation and movement) responds in time related to your skills, ships agility, ships mass and current velocity on any given direction at the time.
That being said frigates and shuttles have way faster response times then... say battleships.

It also helps to orient your self as the captain of the U.S.S enterprise, not as a pilot of an x-wing.

Lag is always bad in any pvp scenario whether it be MMO or FPS or Racing or Sports.

you might try experimenting with a different DNS server on your network setups.
This can sometimes find you a better path to the destinations.
Of course if your problem is local, nothing will help.
Have you actually done a full trace route yet to find where the problem is?
Yeah. the game's server farm is in London.

You guys wouldn't know the ip of the server, would you? So I can run a ping on it. Anyway, if delay isn't uncommon in the community, I think I can make a stand in PvP.

PS: Baneken, that's exactly what I imagine when playing, lol. That's why I'm kind of ok with it, it really feels as if my orders are being patched through the crew and executed, which would take roughly the amount of delay I have.

what the heck do you kids have against using the search bar at the top of every freeging browser now in existence? Especially when it would be easier and less keystrokes than asking.

And what the hell do you have against people posting their questions? If you don't want to answer them just don't click the post. And keep the "kids" to yourself, it makes you look dumb, as nobody can be really certain of the age of the rest in the internet.. You might as well be calling kid a 30 years old dude.

as usual, did everything but answer the point.
truth stings, doesn't it kid.
* this is the internet. your posts define your age. 30 isn't a REAL 30 when it sounds like 12.
'nuff said.

If the posts define your age, you must be metally challenged. Please if you're just going to flame, refrain from posting.

yeah..i'm sorry.. the old 'throw the same argument back with zero support or validation' kind of stops getting points after middle school.
thus we define your problem.

EVE uses very little bandwidth, especially if you turn off automatic portrait generation for chat channels.

I hope the general community in-game is more mature than you.

I'll take a look into that, maybe that option will help with my latency.
