STARTING FRESH IN 2023
Just discovered this game today, and considering it is 20 years old, how will a new player compete with other players and the world today?

I kind of want to give the game a shot, but I dont want to be completely unmatched to players who played for years and years and years longer than I have and therefor knowing I'll never be able to compete with them.

You will be able to compete with them just after a few weeks.
Its skill based pvp.

New players start playing the game every day, just like old players quit the game every day. Like with literally every other game (or pretty much any life activity), there's a constant state of turnover.

You won't be the only new player, and the game is structured in a way that new players have a lot of resources and mechanics to help them.

Also, it's a fallacy to think that it's always "new players against the vets." Most groups in the game will have an appropriate mix of both in their ranks, meaning that the degree of adversity in terms of skill and experience is averaged out. Of course this only applies if you play the game socially, and don't just stick by yourself the entire time. If you only ever solo, then yes, it will be somewhat more difficult for you in the beginning compared to the average social player.

Compete with veterans is a mistake, you either outsmart them or avoid them completly to survive. EVE its a ruthless universe so play safe until you know more about it.

you shouldnt even think about competing with people that play the game for 20 years. same as every other game imo. just check out the free2play option and give it a shoot to see what the gameplay is even like and if its even your thing. the biggest thing about eve is the social aspect. so while you might think about veterans in a competative way these same vets will think about you as a newbro that they could teach. so young padawan, join the vets, fly with them and learn from them : )

ppl cycle out of mmos so they need ppl to come in and eventually take over where the older players left off. having new blood come into the game means there will always be a new generation of veterans later on. new corps and alliances will be formed, new wars. keeps it all cycling.

nah, most people can pvp the vets just fine if they do their due diligence and do some research, especially since a lot of vets dont even pvp and instead spend their 20 years just mining soullessly until the end times

its tough in the beginning. its going to be bearable and relaxing. until you get griefed in a "safe" space. then you start again from the beginning

There's a lot to be said about that. More than I can cover here. On one hand, yes, you'll likely be completely outmatched if you look for a fight early on. There's a very good chance, as a new player, that whoever you're facing will have far more skills than you. They'll do more damage, have better weapon skills, and the CPU/Power to fit their ship better than yours.

On the other hand, many new players have a hard time understanding that, in the beginning, they should focus on maximizing Small Weapons, Frigates and Destroyers, and CPU/Power.... Which would allow them to compete on equal terms, experience aside, with any other player. And that's relatively easy to accomplish, not to mention cost efficient. You might even be able to do it with the free skill points you get from following a referral link. But someone coming into the game blind obviously couldn't be expected to see that, especially if they're drooling over that fancy Battleship. I know I was when I first started, and it's completely understandable. It's only when you attain those high end goals that you realize that keeping it simple is the best way to tackle this game.

If you had a third hand, I'd say that joining a fleet is another way around getting squashed. The Fleet Commander will (or very well should) have experience out the yin yang, and is used to working with new players to guide them to victory, or at least a great fight, even if it ends in defeat.

The bottom line is that experience always wins out. Be it knowledge in combat, or knowing what to focus on. Unless you have a mentor guiding you through it all, you have to just play, make your mistakes, and learn for yourself.

If you are concerned with being outmatch you have already lost. You will be outmatched even if you bust out the CC and buy your way to skill points. They have hobbled this game over the last few years. Good luck if you do start, it will be fun at 1st until the vets start to farm you.

The vets start to farm you? That's also a loosing attitude. A little observation can turn the tables. What activity can you do to be considered "farming" material? Mining in ship with no tank? Opening filaments where you shouldn't? Doing missions in Low Sec? I think the vets (I'm certainly not one) consider how a ship is insufficiently equipped when planning an attack, not anything personal. They scan you and everyone else. If you're the harder target, they'll go for the ship next to you instead, unless you somehow managed to piss somebody off.

Oh don't worry I won eve. As a retired vet I can tell you no one scans ships in a fight. We know what you are in before you even see us. If they don't feel like they can over match you by 10 to 1 they won't even engage or undock. For a new player to come to this game now and start fresh, its a mess and well gl to them.

That's mostly true. I know the tricks and routines. You're not going to scan a Procurer, or weaker mining vessel, or mission ship that's a Cruiser or smaller. In many cases, you'll know the general fit of common ships, and the max tank they can have. So yes, if you have over that in dps with a couple or few Destroyers, you're going to seemingly come out of nowhere and make the kill. But the defending player can easily see it coming and avoid it if they're observant. If local spikes, and you're in a sketchy ship, start aligning. There's lots of time to see where an attack is headed.

As far as bigger ships such as Orcas and Battleships, I would scan them if I were you. An Orca for example can greatly vary in tank, from a pushover, to a juggernaut. And also what ships is it carrying? I've, very satisfyingly I might add, repelled an attack and destroyed a few ships when a fleet underestimated me. They had no idea I was anticipating the attack and ready to swap ships from my maintenance bay. Those were good times lol. Of course I still sent a gf to the would be gankers.

But you can see a gank coming a mile away... (or is it a light year...) Technically, you can become invincible by simply not being there when the attack fleet arrives, providing you thought out your path and don't get scrambled at the other end.

1-2 Months of consistent grind and you're in tech-2 frigs with a great competitive fit.

Hehe another snack has dropped to the pond !

Every veteran out there is ready in comms with nice ships/fits just waiting for YOU to be their fun and content, you nubby nub are the content.

When you get angry you take out the credit card this is how EvE makes money, and vets get content.

I would search for a better game and avoid frustration if i were you.
