Most players start as an alpha and if the game grabs you upgrade to omega. It's possible to pay for your omega through earning in-game money; but it's no easy task.
Like @delete said above you are capped in how many skill points you can earn, however you are allowed 3 characters per account, be it alpha or omega status. This means with proper planning you can increase your skill cap to 15million (5million cap per alpha character) & have them specialized in different avenues of the game.
Now if you are interested into the industrial/economical side of EvE Online, then yes, a subscription is needed. 90% of the content is locked behind Omega status.
My suggestion, play as an Alpha until you get a proper understanding of the game, once you understand the core mechanics, what there is to do & the economy, setup a plan to generate isk. Buy your first month of Omega with $$, follow through with your plan and generate enough isk to continue your subscription with in-game currency instead.
If you are into combat.. you will be playing free and training for a VERY LONG TIME... if you are into industry, you will be disappointing with alpha status, but for good developmental reasons.
Either way, max out your time as an alpha, that way if you do chose to sub omega you can feel good about it..
also this allows you to wait for good omega sales.. so you can get your sub for much cheaper...
Everyone complains about the sub prices.. But I buy three months at a time usually by the time three months is nearly up, another huge omega sale is almost garenteed to happen.
I have never paid 20 dollars for a month of eve.. only ever payed around 13 bucks a month with this method.
its not worth it, simply cuz this game is not worth playing. its not a sandbox anymore cuz some people have amassed so much power ingame that its not possible to play against their rules.
ur getting scammed.. 13 for a month is 50% more than what any other sub based game charged per month. honestly cant believe u fall so easily to the most common sales tactic in history. Put a staggering high price and then do a discount so people feel like they are getting a good deal xD
I would only be getting scammed if I was NOT willing to pay 20 dollars a month... I absolutely am willing to pay the 20 bucks a month for eve online. ITS WORTH IT TO ME.
However I love only paying 13 bucks a month. Feels like I am paying 2013 prices again.
How am I getting scammed if I think 20 dollars a month is a good value for me, Let alone 13? not to mention I can plex my ingame account once every two months with iskies. not as good as many, but great for me.
Me thinks you need to learn a bit more about what scamming actually is. Come play eve online.. The devs wont scam you, nor will the game.. BUTT....
The capsuleers are more than happy to teach you all about scams the hard way.
Welcome to eve online.
