EDIT: Hmm... just saw your second post. That's odd. Sounds like a question for customer support.
But everyone said that buying Starter pack will result in a start over, from scratch. New character. Are You positive about this?
Honestly, I'm not sure. Usually when folks refer to the trial they mean the regular off-steam trial which cannot be linked to a steam-based EVE account, so someone trying the regular trial and then getting the game off Steam would normally be starting fresh. I don't know whether the same holds true for Steam weekend trials. Your best bet would be to get an official answer from customer support.
Hmm. It really feels like it's working. I mean, i just got a steam trading card. After 30 minutes from buying starter pack.
Thanks for direct answer! Is there a possibility that You could announce it?
I've seen many people in-game confused about it. EVE veterans aren't able to help the newbies with that because They are used to the old trial system, and They are convinced it requires making a new account. Thus confusing even more people, hence threads like this one.
You could help lots of people, simply stating that Steam trial can be upgraded with starter pack. :)
its announced in FAQ here http://steamcommunity.com/games/8500/announcements/detail/829047123236580764
