Look, I'm just going to go ahead and say it, since I always do: you chose a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ profession. A lot of people fall into the mining trap as new players. But you could be doing much more interesting things that also pay better. If, as a new player, you go with (and stick with) mining, here's the most likely outcome: you will make peanuts while often getting ganked, especially if you go with a T2 barge, and at some point, you'll get bored and quit.
I can count on one hand the amount of dedicated miners I've met over the course of more than a decade who continued playing past their first two or three years. Most quit within a couple of months.
Also, what gives you the impression that an Orca will somehow defend you? Orcas have no combat capabilities aside from a small amount of drones, which do absolutely nothing to deter gankers.
This is why new players should focus on combat only, and get into pvp sooner rather than later. Otherwise, they don't learn crucial survival skills that let them understand and deal with these situations.
2. Gankers aren't going to go after the Orca, unless it's anti-tanked, and if they do, they will do it separately.
On the note of ganking: Your mack will take approximately 10 hours of mining to pay for itself. I'd advise you to stick with a retriever as it pays for itself in about 2-3 hours.
Honestly, I recommend you avoid mining altogether. The skills gained from it, particularly the ones required to fly exhumers don't transfer well to other professions. The income sucks, thanks in no small part to the sheer number of bots supplying so much ore to the economy. Just about any other profession pays better. The simplest is L4 mission grinding, easy to get into, relatively cheap and you're naturally strong vs gankers; you're income can raise above 100mil/hr. As a miner, good luck breaking 30mil/hr.
Shotgun is 100% correct though. Most new players get sucked into mining (just like i did when i first started playing in 2007. I also quit because of the exact reason he is talking about) and they lose focus and stop playing. Once you go to null sec and start mining the isk jumps through the roof but you are still sitting there with nothing to do other than mining. My suggestion is to start another character and go straight for pvp skills so you can do that while doing some afk mining if thats what you really like.
As far as what other people are telling you, level 4 missions and below will not make you great isk unless your combat skills are rather high. If they arent, its going to take you forever to complete your missions, thus reducing your isk p/hour. As a solo player, or with a friend that you say you have, pvp wont make you money as a newish player. If anything you will lose countless amounts of isk until you have the skills and the know-how of the game....again, which takes quite a bit of time. At the end of the day you just have to do you, this game isnt about instant gradification. Take your time and just do what you enjoy doing.
