Player population

I just started playing Eve Online and was wondering are there really only about 25,000 people who play this game or did I just log on at a weird time? (Around 6pm EST)

Actually that sounds like you logged in at peak time, usually the population sits between 15-17k when I play.

yes 15k (accounts) sound about more reasonable, of which 40-50% are alts, means ppl with 2 or more accounts.

cccp did a good job killing eve over the last years...

Most are alt accounts and CCP adds a few 1000 to the list for measure so 2000 to 7000 people online around is a resonable figure, 1/2 of which are AFK or doing non ship activity such as POS, market or diplo so you are looking at around 1000 to 4000 players. Now take 1000 out as NPC corps untouchable you have 3000 people to play with.

Actually most MMORPGS don't really have much more players on a Server. Eve only has just one Server for everyone instead of like WoW having 100 Realms.

Eve has several servers. Tranquility is EU/US, Serenity is China and then there is Singularity.

His point still stands, because there's only one actual gameplay server available to you. Playing on the Chinese shard is going to require jumping through a lot of hoops, and the other one is the test server.

What you saw meant there were about 25,000 people logged in and playing at that moment; there are about 500,000 people subbed to eve. When you consider that's all on one server, EvE doesn't feel empty; if anything it feels incredibly crowded.

Unless CCP has put out concrete numbers that prove otherwise, it's under 300,000 these days, according to statistical estimates from CSM election turnouts.
