Are there any other on-line games like Eve?
Hi Guys,
I played Eve solid from day one of it going live. Vicious, nasty, back stabbing and totally, totally unforgiving, and I loved it all.
No, I wasn't a pirate or a ganker I was pretty much the opposite. I like to think of myself as a Care Bear with teeth ((grins)). Yes I lost a lot, but it made it all the sweeter when I got past the gank camps and did what I wanted to do. Some brilliant times, I made some great friends, surprisingly with a lot of the guys who were trying to kill me.
I got what Eve was all about I think.

But after a good 15 years of play, I am pretty well burnt out with it now. I've had breaks, I've gone back, even started a new character on a new account. But sadly, it just doesn't do anything for me anymore.

So now, I am looking for a new on-line game like Eve. Not necessarily the space opera thing. But a player led game with events and markets driven by the player base. And yes, even some of that viciousness that Eve is famous for. I want a game that gives me that feeling of worry when I undock, the sick feeling when I realise that I have ♥♥♥♥♥♥-up. But also that "Yeah! Up yours!" feeling when I get past a camp with my valuables still in my ship.

I have tried a few other games, WOW, LotR, ES, but they just don't do anything for me at all. They are all just being led by the hand, doing quest for quest givers who stand on street corners like two bit hookers but with absolutely no challenge at all.

So, is there anything else out there which comes close to Eve?

There are a few fantasy-themed MMOs (like Black Desert Online, a game owned by the company that now owns CCP), and Albion Online. Do be aware that these games can be very grindy, though. I don't believe there are any space-themed MMOs like EVE, as its only two major (and mostly hypothetical) competitors, Elite and Star Citizen, don't have open-world PvP and truly player-run economies. This lack of viable competition is likely why EVE has survived this long, despite all the drama and scandals.

If you want a close approximation of EVE gameplay, but not necessarily in the same format, you should start exploring the survival gaming genre. Games like DayZ, Rust, Deadside, Escape from Tarkov, and many others all have full-loot PvP, although not much of a "trading economy" due to their apocalyptic settings. Still, the feel of danger is there. Outside of EVE, it's my most-played gaming genre, because I like that "not safe anywhere" feeling.

Oh, and since you're quitting, can I have your stuff? Might as well be the first to ask.

My brother plays Elite Dangerous but I never played it. I've just watched YouTube videos of it. When I told him I played EVE, he kind of smirked and shook his head kind of like to say "you let yourself get sucked into THAT game?" It is what it is. Of course, he heard about that famous gank attack on that guy that tried to freight billions and billions of ISK worth of loot and got picked clean. That was before I started playing of course.

Elite Dangerous looks cool in the sense that you can mine, explore and fight but there is a "safe" setting that allows you to avoid PvP in the sense that stuff still gets mined and places still get explored.
You just cant see or interact with the human player who is doing it unless you play the full PvP-friendly mode.

Maybe one day I will try it. It doesn't appeal to me much. Eve has a lot more variety, interactions and content.

I mean, there's a reason why EVE costs $15 a month and Elite goes on sale for a single $7.49 purchase. The games aren't in the same league (or even the same archetype), although initially they were developing it to compete with EVE. They couldn't make it work on an MMO scale from a technical perspective though.

If you ever want to try it, I think I have a few spare keys. I myself probably never will.

I have to agree with Shotgun here. Elite Dangerous was one of the first games I tried post Eve, and again it's just flat, even in Open play. I do think it's a great shame as it had the potential to beat Eve into a '♥♥♥♥♥♥ hat'. But it just became another homogenised bland game that tries to appeal to everybody but actually appeals to only a few.
Maybe I will just have to accept that there is no other game out there that can come close to matching the joy and heartache that is Eve's trademark.

Closest thing you're going to get is face of mankind (discontinued). Face of mankind used to by my "EVE" and people that spoke negatively of the game never really gave it a chance. In game roleplay/politics/economy was all sandbox and very much like EVE.

Although it has closed shop, old members of the player base have attempted to make their own version of it. The player base is small but dedicated, hell I'm one of them, i'd keep an eye on it if you're interested (although no guarantees as any game development goes).

A lifetime ago, before I got into Eve, I was a big fan of Tibia. It's been many years since I played, but back then it had both loot loss and EXP loss on death. It was ultra hardcore. Die too many times, and your Level 100 druid could become a level 1 newb, which can happen on a PVP world. It's freemium so you can check it out if you feel like it. Just be warned that it's old school.
