Is switching between Omega and Alpha viable?
Hi,

So I just restarted playing EVE, started a new account just to have a fresh start. I'm an Alpha atm and will remain so for a while, figured I'd first train up a bit of those 5mil points before switching.

What I'd like to know, is if I reach the 5mil mark, then sub to Omega, then at times drop off when I'm busy with work and stuff, what happens to my Omega skills/skillpoints please? Does it go "dormant" and then reactivate once I go Omega again or do I get to keep using the skills I trained as an Omega?

Also, if I die as an Alpha after having skilled up as an Omega, do I lose any skillpoints, asking because clones were a funny thing 10 years ago when I played.

Any other advice in this regard would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Omega skills dormant til you return. Death doesn't usually lose points.

you only loose skill points if you die in a tech 3 Cruiser im pretty sure and that tech 3 cruiser is often like a 45 day train for omegas

Thanks, how does it make your Omega skills "dormant"? I was hoping you could train up in Omega and then the times when I'm not really playing EVE at least still having access to use those skills (e.g. reprocessing 5, etc.).

How does it choose what you'll have access to and what not? Couldn't find any clear explanation of it anywhere.

Much appreciated.

So when you go into your character sheet to train your skills, the yellow boxes denotes "Omega" skills. In addition, when you go into the ship tree, there's an Omega symbol that blocks off ships from Alpha players

Expand the "Alpha skill set" here:

https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Clone_states

Basically, when you're in the Alpha state, the game only uses those skills, up to the levels listed. So if you trained Capacitor Management to level 5, for example, it will only use it up to level 4, providing you with a 20% bonus, instead of a full 25% bonus.

Thanks for the info.

I heard there was a 5mil skillpoint limit in Alpha, if I reach that, then go Omega and train further on Alpha Only skills (i.e. not any that show Omega) and then switch back to Alpha, will I have access to ALL the Alpha skills or only up to where I was with the 5mil mark?

Sorry for all the questions, but I go through long periods of heavy work loads and then don't want to have to pay for a sub I will only be using on the odd weekend for an hour or two and would at least just like to know what I can and can't do during that time.

Yes, you can have access to about 20 million skill points that way. However, there's not much reason to do this, as you can essentially "max out" the alpha skill set for a single race's cruiser-sized ships (I made a guide for someone about how to train for a Gila, should be in the first couple of pages). Of course, expanding your training would give you access to frigates as well, and give you versatility in terms of being able to use multiple races, so I guess it does make sense in some regard.

When you're in the Alpha state, you can use something called an "Alpha Injector" daily that will give you 50,000 SP. This might be the way to go, because despite being more expensive than a sub, you don't have to commit. You can also straight-up use normal skill injectors to boost yourself. Though you shouldn't do either of these until you finish up the first 5 million SP that you can train for free (unless you don't care about the money).

You will want to sub at some point. T2 and certain faction ships are locked behind Omega, and they're absolutely game-changing.
What happens if I have more than 20mil SP and then let the account turn Alpha? Will I lose those points?

No, the skill points in "Alpha" skills will remain available and usable and the skills in "Omega" skills will become unavailable (not lost) until you upgrade to Omega again, after which all the Omega skills will become active and usable again.

hahaha, love that explanation, where's the award button? :)
