Generally, not worth it if it makes you spend considerable extra time in whatever site you're doing. Since you're not using a dedicated salvage boat, at best you're looking at like 2 salvagers, with no extra bonuses from rigs and/or ship skills. That means you're going to be sitting there for a while, which could be time spent on a smaller income than whatever PvE it is you're doing.
A better alternative could be a tractor beam with a single salvager, so you can do it while you're fighting, especially if you only go for the medium and large wrecks, and ignore the small ones; you shouldn't stay in the site any extra time that way.
Tech II and Sleeper wrecks are always worth it, though.
An MTU makes sense when you're shooting ships that can drop nice loot, though, since you can more easily get all of it that way.
