Why can't I target?

I did a mission and fought a bunch of terrorists. After the first kill, I could not lock target on anyone. Why is that?

I just sta there helpless.

Granted the mission said I would die, but is this part of the real...err..EVE universe and my training? What did they do to me?

I don't really remember the career missions and haven't done the new tutorial missions so I can't say if you're not supposed to be able to lock on, but did you try ctrl and clicking on the name of your target in the overview? Was your target in range of your ship? (each ship has a max targeting range)


You should also note that EVE has electronic warfare modules, which can jam your targeting or decrease your lock-on range/speed (one can tell if one is being affected by such an attack via icons that show up over the capacitor in the UI), though I doubt you'd be getting hit by EWAR in the tutorial.
