Why can't I sell items above the default price?
The game refuses to let me sell an item if I raise the price even a cent above the default price it started at. Why is this?

Edit 1: I mined a bunch of Plagioclase with a per-unit value of 47.50, but when I go to sell it, the default per-unit value is 30.99 and the game won't let me create the sell order if I raise it to 31.00 or above. That's a pretty big loss of money for seemingly no reason.

Edit 2: Setting the duration to three months from immediate seems to have fixed the problem. Still though, I could use an explanation to this.

Edit 3: Is it because there aren't enough buy orders for the immediate setting to be possible at any higher price?

Two things:

First is what you’ve already deduced.

Second is that all the buy/sell orders are made by other players and follows supply/demand theory. If the price is too low for you it means there’s more supply than there is demand and you might be better off mining something else.

Looks like I figured it out all on my own within five minutes. Mining Plagioclase for the past couple of days has satisfied the immediate demand entirely.

Obviously I'll leave this here in case anyone else comes along with the same question.

Actually, here's a good additional question: is there any way to sell ore to an NPC just in case every available buy order gets filled? Or will I just have to sit on my ore or make a sell order at that time? I'm grinding up to a ship that I want but suddenly my source of infinite money doesn't seem so infinite anymore.

It also depends on where you sell it. Every region has its own market, hauling the ore one region over mean making more money. It might also mean making less.

Sites like https://evemarketer.com can help you find better deals.

No and only if you want to.

The first is a hard stop, there are only a few items that NPC's buy or sell but ore isn't one of them. You can see NPC orders on the market at a glace, they have an expiration greater than 90 days (the longest a player can set), usually 365 days give or take a few days.

Unless you're looking for an immediate return on your time, you can always put a sell order up for as long as three months. Also, every time you modify an order it resets the expiration of that order.

Ahh... the old strugle with eve market mechanics... good memories.

Just a small advice.
COMPRESS that ore in a citadel, take it to jita and sell it for a better price. (around 5 - 20% better prices) Also their volume is reduced 95% so is easier to move.

I'm selling it raw due to bad reprocessing skills. I'm also too chicken to leave highsec space (hate PVP especially in a permadeath game like this where ship destruction is permanent,) although I don't know what the security rating in Jita is.

You don't lose any ore by compressing it. You only win win win.
You don't need to leave high sec there always a safe pass between trade hubs.
Check your map.

jita is 1.0

Oh. Alright. I was probably mixing it up with refining it into Tritanium or Pyerite.

I glossed over this earlier but I'm curious now, what ship are you saving up for?

Right now, I'm saving up for the Mordu's Legion Garmur frigate. The lowest price I've found for it is roughly 60 million ISK.

I'm a bit of a ship collector, so it won't be the last ship I save up for. It wasn't the first, after all.

Garmur is a pretty big step up from an Algos.

60m sounds about right, though I think you can get them for about 55m in Jita.

Maybe I'll have to sail out to Jita and see if I can get a lower price. Thanks for the information.

Edit: One problem with that. Jita is in Caldari space - I'm a Gallente Federation character. There's also lowsec systems between the Federation starter region and Jita.

You won't travel any lower than 0.5 if your navigation is set to take the safest route. Long as you don't autopilot you'll be fine traveling.

0.4 and lower is lowsec, but if you're really set on not traveling I would suggest finding some haulers or a hauling corp to do business with, and someone that'd be willing to buy/sell in distant market regions for you (and trustworthy).

What threats can I expect to face in a .5 system? Will there be player pirates or just NPC annoyances? Or both?

It's worth noting that a friend of mine said that player pirates won't bother robbing or attacking a player using the starting ship, so that might give me some good "new guy, nothing valuable" armor. But then again, since I'm buying a ship, there's the return trip...
