Accounts are permanent and those are just the online ones.
I'm sure there a is a lot of more created accounts.
And now that i checked, the game has never had problems whit lack of players since 2008.
No reason to "compete" since start citized is a scam and Elite dangerous is an fps.
EVE is a political, social and economical space sim
If anything doing what's suggested in the original post would help reduce the number of players, as you'd end up with the same reason why people get into Guild Wars 2, Secret World Legends, and other free titles only to shelf them later and not get back to them.
trust me i have played Eve online from 2004, so i know the game inside and out and it has not moved a bit from it, the only thing that has been upgraded is the graphic´s just alittle bit, then added some new enemy´s to the table and some new ships, oh yeah new ships then nerfed the old ships and ruined the game for the old elite !
So what you actually pay for is to use tons of reallife time on NOTHING, because CCP ruins your ships in the end anyways ..
They even nerfed the mining ships, so screw em ..
Free for all or get lost with your space sims that should be forgotten 10 years ago when you first started to ruin it ..
So because others don't express similar opinions you think this is the best response?
If you've been consistently been playing the game since it's initial launch year then you should be able to understand the reasons behind ship design changes.
As they say, you either learn to adapt or die. Of course, like I mentioned, EVE targets a specific niche just like star citizen and elite: dangerous. Everyone has their likes and dislikes for each game for their own reason.
Now, if we're talking about a one-time purchase, we might be onto something. How about $12,000 for a lifetime paid account? 70 years of $15 payments all in one!
Back in my day, a lifetime membership only cost like $200USD!
I think there's almost no more games that provide that; i know of two only because i happened across them in research, but they lack quite a great deal due to small team size and community.
That said I'd be down for spending a few hundred on a lifetime EVE sub. It'd let me and others help start new end-game content for EVE - fashion spaceships (this honestly sounds bad).

All our veteran players helped us on this journey and we plan on continuing to develop this amazing Space MMORPG. Thank you for your support!
EVE online is one, that is 1 big cool space game. One universe, one war - that is literally what EVE IS.
See.. in order to advice on something, you might want to learn at least a little about it. This is really not your Battlefield or whatever cool kids play these days.
I think what he meant is merge Valkyrie/Gunjack/Nova with EVE Online, which would certainly be cool but would likely entail rebuilding the game from the ground up.
You also must be very unfamiliar with the type of gamer that plays EVE; that's the 30+ year old gamer with a full time job, more than likely a family and kids, who's looking for something a little more than "Left click shoot, right click aim" and the games you mention as EVEs "competitors" are quite literally "left click shoot, right click aim" with tall talk about making them more in-depth at some point in the unforeseeable future
PRO TIP: These baity, troll posts only work well in discussions threads for games like "The Witcher 3" or "Call of Duty" where you'll find a bunch of triggered 14 year olds that will argue, tooth and nail, that it's the best game ever
Get back to CIG's marketing department you soulless monster!!
I'm not sure what the point of this post was supposed to be, since it seem like it's supposed to make out that the game has changed a lot but then posting videos of 2004 vs 2018 gameplay right next to each other simply highlights how little the game has actually changed.
You're aware that even with your gross oversimplification those games are still 100% more complex than eve right? I mean they require two whole mousebuttons after all.
