Steam: how to fix the issues with saves.

Missing objects in the map, opened crates, save file gone after restarting, nothing in the back of the endgame base.

Short version

- Remove SavesDir & SavesDir2 and / or use Steam beta client (View / Settings / Account / Steam Beta Participation) and opt-in.
- Eventually, regenerate the entire map in your save file by removing the CellsCache folder.

Long version

This bug is caused by the Steam client.

Steam autocloud is working this way:
- When you launch the game, save files from your computer are downloaded from the cloud.
- When you stop the game, Steam is uploading files that changed.

When Steam autocloud was disabled, the files in the cloud stayed. But the Steam client is still downloading your old files from the cloud at launch, and they are never updated when you quit.

So Steam overwrites your save files with the old files you have in the cloud.
Steam fixed this issue in their client beta. You can also try to remove SavesDir & SavesDir2, and the vdf file in SNAppData if you have one.

Only then, Steam will work as intended.

View / Settings / Account / Steam Beta Participation, click on change and select Steam beta update.

Afterward, when Steam is not synchronizing / overwriting your files, you can think of regenerating the map to fix opened chests, or objects that are supposed to be there but are not ending portal included.

Do do this, you have to remove the entire cache folder in your save file:

<pathOfYourSteamFolder>\SteamApps\common\SubnauticaZero\SNAppData\SavedGames\slotXXXX\CellsCache

If you do it right, this will fix your issue.
You will keep your bases / vehicles / progression. PDA will be regenerated as well, you won't be able to pick them again if you already unlocked their entries.

A lot of threads are being merged. If it is your case, please follow the instructions above.

UPDATE: Steam might have pushed the fix for the cloud issue in its stable version. If you have an updated Steam, and still have opened crates in your new games, let us know.

Save Game lost ?!

Hey guys,

Had about 27hrs in the game, stoped because couldnt pass the invisble wall at the end and now my save game is gone. Anyone has a soluton for that ? Its freakin' annoying

Started a new game yesterday on official relase, played it for hours and saved often.
And now I restart the game and see there is no save.... T_T

2. Go to Menu.
3. Savegames exists.
4. Left Game
5. Start Subnautica - All Savegames lost. In the Savegamedirectorys the Directory of the savegames exists, but only with directorys and no Files.

I've been in the game since tuesday, scared to close out. are my 130 hours gonna be lost? these devs promised your save works when the game is released. This is the LAST time I buy a pre-release game. It's a great game but why do they need to lie? Its total BS

Just commenting to add that my saves are also lost. I have checked the save folders and they seem empty,

I also went to the https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage I cannot even find anything Subnatica there.

Does this mean that when devs disable cloudsaves our saves got deleted?

I can confirm this happens on Xbox One as well, all progress I made yesterday in the span of multiple hours is gone after loading the savegame. My savegame seemed fine when you press "play" to load it, the hours played is totalled up correctly I believe. But my entire progress of yesterday evening is gone.

Edit: I'm starting to believe I forgot to save because I was tired.

Игра успешно сохраняется. И можно загрузить сохранение.
При выходе из игры сохранение остается в папке.

Повторный запуск игры очищает файлы из папок новых сохранений.

Сохранения созданные до релиза никуда не исчезают.

Happened to me also, lost about 3 hours worth of progress was saving every pod enter. and after restart save loads like 3 hours ago - abandoned the game until fixed

Пока что "решение" нашел одно.

1. Перед тем как выйти из игры. Сохранить с помощью архиватора папку со слотом игры.
2. Войти в игру. (игра пропадет) .
3. Распаковать сохранение. (слот игры не появится в списке)
4. Создать новую игру Креатив. (для скорости)
5. Сохранить игру. Выйти из креатива.
6. Слот вашей Игры появится в списке сохраненных игр.

Это "костыль", но можно играть.

1. Before you exit the game. Save the folder with the game slot using the archiver.
2. Log in to the game. (the game will be lost) .
3. Unpack the save. (the slot game will not appear in the list)
4. Create a new Creative game. (for speed)
5. Save the game. Exit the creative.
6. The slot of your Game will appear in the list of saved games.

This is a "crutch", but you can play.

Cannot see the portal of the end of the game

Al-An is gone in front of me throw the portal but i can not follow him. There is no portal there, I just saw him disappering after the dialogue. Please help me!

i have the same issue and i seem to have missing floors since also i have reinstalled the game 3 times used the troubleshooting and no luck so far plus i've deleated the caches also as was said back in 2020 if you find away to fix please let me know

Yeah I have same problem, happened to me twice. The second time I actually did a test and saved and quit the game after I reached the lifepod. I then reloaded to see if the save game was there, and it was (I even deleted my early access game save). However I shutdown at the end of my day, and today when I started the game.....bingo my new game save was gone , but my old early access save was restored. I think we need to delete the steam cloud save cache and start again.
