Game crash and save file lost
I finally got around to playing this after having it on my HD for nearly a year. Was 7.5 hours into playing, and things were getting good (got diamonds and was about to upgrade my sea truck at last) when the game crashed. It crashed so hard that the computer froze up and I had to reset the power supply (1st time In 2.5 years on this machine).

When I fired the game back up, I was on the first island you go to explore, but with no gear, and not items.

Had to restart a game, of which not very happy about obviously.

Is there a way to make back ups of the save files perhaps? Outside of backing up the entire save folder(s)?

Thanks in advance.

There isn't any cloud currently, so the only way to backup the save file is to copy the save slot somewhere else.

Thanks. That is what I've done. Guess I'll get in the habit of backing up my save when I'm done with each session.

Games really should have more than one save slot, imo.

Subnautica has the most stupid and demented save game system, I can't believe the devs never looked at another game, how they do it so much better. Crashing the game always makes you lose hours of progress, it goes back to some day old save game for some reason, I really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate when a game is so incredibly pathetic and stupid in one area, it is mind boggling. Devs, how about PROVIDING SEVERAL SAVE SLOTS, like any other game on the planet? How about a function to LOAD save games (ever heard about that one? It is a super new function where you can decide which save game you want to load /S)

Besides that, because of all that incompetence, they of course can't use the steam cloud saves features neither, while pretty much 99% of all other games on the planet manage it, just not Subnautica. So yeah, your computer breaking, the SSD breaking, having to reinstall the game, bang, and all your progress is wiped. You have to use save game manager to manually save the save game, like in 2003. Jup, I'm pissed, just lost 10 hours of progress AGAIN.
