Are they improved compared to the original? This is the only aspect of the game i really care

You get one new "room" which is over-sized and the biomes are fine. The main problem I had was finding a "good:" location for a large base. Lots of good micro-base locations, but no one "main" base location.

they don't go together this time, base building is improved, but....
i couldn't find that special spot in the entire game....yes base building is better but the biomes are so cluttered its hard to find what i call a "perfect spot".

and the map is so small it take away from the fun of base building to.

I built a micro base at the shipwreck, and used it more than my mega base 1000m down.

The game just doesn't flow the way you expect it to.

Basically, just build a base at Delta and use it as a hub.

Could you give me an estimate of small? Original was big but had massive empty areas on the outer ring

Exactly
I had two micro base locations on either side of delta station and that's it... looked around for bigger areas to build in like their were in subnautica but nothing...

ahhh.... subnautica you know you could build a base in main islands see cave? put thermal generator by the vents on the other side of the dividing wall (after kill the reaper) connect it with 2 power nodes....

I don't know what happened to other world during the production of this game but its sad.

First one was large open ocean.
This has a lot more land, tunnels, rocks etc.

The enormous open spaces of the first game do not exist in Below Zero.
Enough place for a large base.
But not enough place for a large base with a nice view.

Here is the thing, the buildings are improved and much larger. The game however features much smaller biomes which is a real odd design. There is no sense of wonder or vastness to explore in BZ like in the OG. It's just very cramped zones with not much to discover in them.

I had sooo much fun exploring those empty areas... huh

to answer your question:
i would say with all the clutter accounted for its about as big as the top right corner of original subnautica.(mountains, mushroom forest and bulb zone)

but in that area its hard to find a good spot to make a grand base

So the new biomes are more like the kelp forest?

I see ty, that's indeed quite small...

Yes and no. There are a bunch of cool new base pieces: the large room, glass domes, partition and doors, the jukebox, the control room, the fridge, and a bunch of decorative items. A good variety of new plants, especially food crops.

On the other hand the spotlight is missing, and you can't make a cyclops mobile base.

And as others have said, I'm having a real hard time finding a location for a mega base I'm happy with. I want to be centrally located, but not in the ugly thermal vents / purple vents area with the very annoying cryptosuchuses. The twisty bridges area is really lacking any nice flat building area. You can just float everything above it but that doesn't look so good.

The draw distance is so low that the water filtration machine unloads if you're standing at the other end of a large room, leaving a big ugly hole in the side of your base.

On paper, there are a few base building improvements from the first game. In practice, the second game is very lacking in a lot of areas.

I don't get this at all. With just a little imagination you can build a complex base virtually anywhere. I built the following in Twisty Bridges in the last 15 minutes using console commands just to demonstrate what you can do.

Well, I suppose I tend to gravitate toward flatter bases because the click-jump ladders are kind of ugly an inelegant. Notice that none of the pre-built bases use them. They have stairs... which we can't make.
