For Nvidia:
Right click on your desktop
Nvidia Control Panel
Manage 3D Settings
"Global Settings" Tab
Scroll down to "Max Frame Rate"
set it to your the refresh rate of your monitor, if you don't know, try 60.
This can cause screen tearing if you don't have a Gsync or Freesync monitor (and have it enabled), if you have horrible screen tearing turn Vsync back on.
Won’t you get screen-tearing then?
If you don't have Free/Gsync, potentially. Vsync introduces input latency, so even without Free/Gsync I'd choose to run without Vsync.
However you can just run Vsync and it'll cap the framerate to your refresh rate.
I literally said "set it to your the refresh rate of your monitor". So set it to 144.
So your next option is to make sure your GPU fan isn't clogged, your case fans aren't clogged, the dust filters on your case aren't clogged.
If they're all fine, then the next step is to use MSI Afterburner and check your core clock speeds and make sure your GPU isn't being overboosted. If it's being overboosted, reduce the core clock.
If your card is still overheating, the next step is to either to accept your card now runs hot and cap the framerate lower or replace the thermal paste on it. Replacing the thermal paste on a GPU is riskier than doing it on a CPU as the die is exposed.
limiting the framerate saves power and reliability/hardware. unless it's a high speed fps shooter like doom, you should always enable vsynch. beating the framerates of the guy next door is schoolboy stuff. i don't say u did it, it's for the ´audience´ ;)
But then the game looks ugly...
30FPS is unplayable. I could live with low details, but 60FPS is the minimum.
While monitoring GPU Temp, Fan Speed %, and FPS on secondary monitor I compared this game to Shadow of the Tomb Raider @ 2k, Horizon Zero Dawn @ 1920x1080, Fallout 4 @ 2k (with serious GFX Enhancing mods) and this game maxes my GPU temp instantly while those other demanding titles do not. Note: 2k Handled by Nvidia DSR.
Forcing V-Sync on in the Nvida Control panel took care of it for me. I tried capping the frame rate first and got tearing. Note: I'm using an older 1920x1080 @ 60Mhz monitor, if you have a newer 120Mhz monitor I can't offer info on those.
FYI Modern GPU's will throttle to prevent overheating. I have mine manually set to a max of 85C (185f) and it can run all day at that temp. The MSI Twin Frozr fans don't even turn on until 60c (140f).
So, it's easily managable but it is an issue that needs fixed.
