As above, i would recommend playing Subnautica first, if you can buy it on sale it's very cheap.
Now if it's a bad game, then it's not worth it at any price, but that's a distinction that needs to be made.
That being said I'm still going to play BZ for the Lore, but I'm not happy about it, and glad I got an early copy before they raised the price. If you don't own BZ yet, I would suggest waiting for a 50% (<$15) sale.
quite a few actually.
BZ on the other hand knowing they could never get people with the big unknown ocean ever again, leaned into a much heftier narrative. The explore able zone is much smaller making for a tighter game overall. basically if the lack of narrative in the first game and excessive meandering would bother you skip the orig, otherwise play it first.
Adds alot of lore...
Why dont you mentiiokn that instead of what you personally think,.
Its not hard lol.

OP --
To add: In Original Subnautica, the main character is white male dude who never talks, and who listens to discussions recorded by other white dudes while all alone on a massive underwater map. Original Subnautica storyline was pretty straight forward. Think of it as an underwater survival game with a bit of story.
Below Zero: The main character is a black female in search of what happened to her sister while working on planet 4546b. There is a lot of voice acting, and it's really good. A segment of the playerbase is mega butt-hurt about this. If you're afraid to play a character with a slightly higher-pitched voice, then maybe skip on below zero. Dialogue isn't terrible, and the premise is believable. This storyline doesn't really intersect with the storyline of meeting an alien intelligence in any meaningful way, which is a bit of a disappointment. But in comparison, this is like 4 times the story, and there is actual dialogue now.
Below Zero also adds a bunch of new base pieces that I wish I had for the first one. Sadly, Below Zero does seem to have a smaller map (knew this going into beta).
My recommendation is that you be truthful with yourself about the type of person and player you are. If you're open minded, go with original subnautica first. Then go into below zero. If you do it the other way around, you're going to be frustrated at the lack of base pieces, such as a big rooms, the glass ceilings, the food you can actually combine into dishes, etc.
Just remember that this is really a survival game first, with some story, and not a heavy story juggernaut that some people think this game is supposed to be.
