What happened to Ryley?
Fr though, there is mention of the aurora crash and the sunbeam, as heard and seen from data pads in subnautica below zero, but there isn't a single mention of Ryley (the first game's player). Am I missing something or did the developers really not mention the guy?

I don't remember him ever being mentioned. Just the crashes as you said.

Two possibilities
1. Alterra eliminated him so he would not talk. They took control of the cure and all tech he found.
2. The parties agreed not to publicize his exploits for mutual benefit since he owed them billions. He gets off the hook and they get his silence.

Ryley's busy with his shark cage experience business back at home, sippin' Margarita's on the beach while developing his new clothing line: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1xv.1bMFY.1VjSZFqq6ydbXXaq.jpg

he's perfectly fine not being mentioned in THIS game. Maybe SN 2 ;)

LOTS of medical exams. Lawsuit settlement with Alterra. Talk show circuit. Book deal. Movie deal. Endorsement deal for a line of camping/survival equipment. Celebrity marriage. Celebrity divorce. Another book deal. Short run reality series. Eventual fading into dull obscurity. Contemplation later in life over maybe seeing the Sea Emperor children again. Another book deal.

I highly doubt Alterra would try to shut him up when it would be far more lucrative to slap their logo on his back and brag how their technology saved Ryley from everything 4546B could throw at him.

The Aurora needed 18 months to make it to subnautica. They gave Riley a tiny rocket to meet a rescue ship halfway. Has the Neptune enough supplies to make the trip or is it a scam to silence Riley and let him die in space?

If he really meet a rescue ship means also that his survivial is not granted or his freedom. They accuse him of theft (3 trillion in minerals) and imprison him or send him on a remote colony to work his debt of, that would be a life sentence in slave labour.

Point is, one way or another, Riley dissappears.

But you're right though - BZ is silent enough on Ryley to spark a good conspiracy theory or two (Deep State operatives are everywhere)
