Air pipe laying for dummies - please!
I am obviously some kind of clutz, because although I can lay a chain of pipes down from an air pump, sort of, extending the chain in a direction I want it is something I find really difficult, particularly at depth where I am avoiding rock walls etc.

I am not sure how to move, and when and how to click, to make the new pipe section extend where I want it. It seems to hinge or not attach with a mind of its own.

Can someone point me at a step by step instruction for idiots?

Many thanks.

Placing them in a straight line down is very hard IMO because there's no button to descend.

What I do is to swim down while watching the pipe and when I see it go out of my field of view I know I reached maximum length so I place it. Then repeat with the next part.

It seems there is a depth/length limit for the pipes, I couldn't extend the line below ~70m.

The air pipes are known to be super glitchy in below zero so it's probably not your fault. Also, they aren't worth the hassle, just find the fragments for a better o2 tank, it's easier. Here's a post pointing that out https://steamcommunity.com/app/848450/discussions/0/3765607648968887210/

The best advice is to not use them.

Thanks, guys. This is my second time in SBZ after a long absence, thought I would try the pipes out since I didn't use them the first time.

Yes, I do have an upgraded air tank.

But... there is a button to descend vertically. It's called the C key.

True, I had only tried the standard crouch keys Ctrl and Alt at that time. Thanks for the feedback.

I just don't understand how it works. I managed to place like 7 or 8 pipes from an air pump, almost straight down. Then I came back with more pipes to make it go further... but now I just can't seem to make it work anymore : I have a pipe in hand from the hotkeys, and it only allows me to place a pipe if I look directly at the end of the current pipe. And of course, only from under it, looking up, therefore it only allows me to built them upward now. Great.

There is no depth/length limit. You do need to stretch the pipes out to achieve maximum length, which is about 10 meters per pipe.

Save and quit to desktop and relaunch the game

On my playthrough, i can't go further than 180 meters. Max. No matter how I stretch them. Beyond 180 meters, the game allows me to place new pipes only horizontally or back upwards again, not downwards.
