The fact everything looks the same makes it boring as well as horrible to know where you are and where to go. The fog makes it even worse for both maneuvering around and making the biome even more visually uninteresting.
Also that defense system the game gives you right before you get in there completely removes any kind of fear you could get by making the shadow leviathan more of a minor annoyance than a potential threat.
This entire place needs a serious rework.
The game was still fun, but it felt pretty seriously lackluster compared to the first subnautica.
With the afterburner and PDS, you can do one better -- go on the offensive. The PDS can be charged for a very powerful shot, and it doesn't take too many to kill the Shadow Leviathans. Once they start to flee, chase them down using the afterburner and continually ram their heads, which causes damage. You can usually corner them somewhere and then continually charge the PDS and blast them, while not letting off the ramming attack. They're so helpless using these tactics that I almost feel bad for them.
This method only takes about 2 minutes and is so effective that I never even need to get out of the Seatruck to repair it. Just make sure to detach any modules first to give the Seatruck better speed and maneuverability.
