How come one of the best places to build [SPOILERS]
Was given away for nothing to Marguerit? For real though...She has one of the coolest looking areas around her, close to 2 amazing areas (Crystal Caves and Tree Spires), sits right next to 2 large thermal vents that could be used for thermal power, has tons of basic and late game materials all around her in every direction....

Oh sure, I could go and just build a base at the large opening to the Crystal Caves, and transmit power there from the thermal vents...but who the hell wants to live right next to that cranky old lady?

Not to mention the Leviathans in the cave. Not like an entire base can be equipped with an electric perimeter defense system (missed opportunity right there devs...)

It just kind of ticks me off that she got one of if not the best spots in the whole game....

Tbh it's not that she blocks the best spot. It's the fact that it is the best spot. The reasoning behind that is probably exactly that. The devs wanted Marg having the best spot.

But do you really need that much of those materials? I really didn't need that much nickel and kyanite in the end as it's not used for building. I built my base in the starting area and didn't find routes to all other relevant places to be too long with the sea truck. I simply use solar panels to generate power. I really don't get why there are things like bio or nuclear reactors. Never used those. I like the base to be slightly below water, having no predators around and having such a nice vista from all the windows with a day/night cycle. I never felt the need to have multiple bases or a teleporter. Coming home after a long trip just felt nice every time this way.

Marg defeated a Reaper in her Prawn.
She is badass, she is smart.

Where do you expect her to build a base. In the void? XD

The game map isn't so big as the first that it's fine to build a base anywhere. I chose to build my base in the Deep Lilypad Caves surrounding those large flowers. 100% worth it due to the constant illumination with no annoying weather effects. If you choose to build in those places then thermal/bio/nuclear reactors are a must and pretty much your only option.

You can build a base on lilypads and then connect it with a loooooooooooooooooong vertical compartment and a ladder down below.

Install an array of solar panels there and you are good to go.

If you have materials the sun energy can power up a whole base areal.

I've got an array of solar panels which sums up to 4500 power. At day I am barely losing anything as the 12 water filtration machines fulfilled their duty and have water.
If I would remove all crafted resources from these machines instantly, the power might get drained a lot.

At night, the reserve is acceptable either if there isn't much energy used.

The jukebox slowly drains energy, but it's by far not enough to even reach 4000 before the next day.

While there surely are many energy resources and I used them all in the original, in BZ I went pretty well with just having solar panels.

As all these bases are physically connected with each other, they all use the same hull integrity and energy level.
Which is weird, as the hull integrity is just as high as I put many reinforcements on one end, but that also transfers to the other end a mile away. ^^

Do I need all those resources? Eh, probably not.

Look, I just got done ramming 1 of 2 Chelicerate to death with my truck at the Tree Spires. I wanted to assert my dominance over the area and build a base here.

Its a cool looking place, the Vent Gardens are super cool looking, and I like the purple aesthetic of the area.

I had a plan...then I swam down a bit to the geothermal vents, and found that I would basically be next door neighbors with Marg...

Marg is a loner, as am I, and neither of us want to be that close to each other.

Just kind of ticks me off that the coolest looking area to build a base in or around was given away to a throw away prequel character from the first game, who honestly doesnt have much bearing on this game. Like, you would still be able to progress both the Al-An story and Sam/Robin's story if Marg was removed from the game.

Like...first game, build wherever you want. This game, oh sorry we gave the best spot away to someone who really doesnt mean anything to the plot.

I understand her location from a lore perspective mind you. She "built" her place in a resources rich area next to a reliable power source far from the prying eyes of an Alterra satellite.

Though, its kind of beyond me that with how advanced technologically Alterra is that their satellite would not be able to ping the exact spot her underwater base is....

Anyway...the devs know that people love building in their games...and they gave the best spot away for building to a secondary character who has no real bearing on the plot.

There's another really cool spot!

The chamber in the floating rock in lilipads - where Omega lab is. :P

Yet there are no bases on the lilypads and as far as I read that correctly, there was initially no way to build on lilypads but they implemented it later.

I think I should finally start getting something up there. :)

Well in the original solar power was quite weak IIRC, so you eventually needed other forms of energy just to keep up with your rising consumption.

In Below Zero, not really. I guess they're useful if you want to build your base in a cave, although unlike the original those are all maze like, so that could be quite a challenging endeavour.
