Some alien containment questions
I have a 3 story alien containment and I would like to place 1 of every kind of fish in it. So my first question is, does the larger version in the large room mean I can store more fish, or am I stil stuck at 30 (3x10)?

I want to decorate it too, so I was thinking of placing some rock grubs. Do they count in the fish total? I feel like they shouldn't, but fear they will...

And last question about pengwings. Do they just hop around on the bottom or do they need dry land somehow? Can I have pengwings living in my base outside the containment as well?

If anyone knows any of this its apppreciated, otherwise Im off to experiment!

large room versions are the same creature count as a regular alien containment

Did they change this? It used to be 2x the small tank.

nope, it's always been the same amount of fish they can support of the normal multipurpose room version

The size of the alien containment tank (AC) is the same whether you build it in a multipurpose room (MPR) or a large room. You get 10 slots for each level you build, again, that's the same regardless of the room you build it in. For 3 levels, you'll get 30 slots. I've never built one higher than 3, so I don't know if you can expand it further, though I think you can.

Do keep in mind that some creatures take up more than 1 slot. The harvestable fish are all 1 each, but you will only get 7 pengwings in a 1-story AC tank, for example. On the subject of pengwings, they swim in the tank. I've never seen them use the walk animation in the tank. They apparently don't need to breathe in the AC tank either. I've never seen them shoot to the surface for air.

I don't believe you can release pengwings or penglings inside of a base, though I've never tried. I've also never tested rockgrubs in the AC, so I can't answer that question.

Finally, for your goal of having 1 of everything in the tank, just be aware of the size differences. Glow whale, titan holefish, etc may take up 3-4 slots, and if you overload it, the game randomly picks things to kill off. I'd suggest breeding some back-ups in case that happens to save yourself running all over the world hunting eggs in strange places. Some creatures only have a few eggs anyway (like squidsharks and trivalves), so they may be irreplacable if you don't plan ahead.

There are some errors / misconceptions in the comments above. So let me correct the mistakes.

There is no hard limit on how many creatures you can place in an alien containment.
What you think is the hard limit (10), is in fact the limit where fish cease to breed.

As said above, this limit isn't related to the fish itself but its size in your inventory (the x value to be exact). So indeed, Glow Whale will take more space.

As for the value in the large room's alien containment, it's 18. It changed a few updates ago.

Appreciate the update! Sometimes it's hard to suss that stuff out with experimentation alone, especially when new builds are coming out fairly often which can change the values and make new tests necessary. Data direct from the source is always better

Thanks for the replies so far! So I guess my limit is 3x18=54 fish right now. Seems like a lot actually.

I'm not sure I get it, you mean x value as in the number of horizontal spaces a fish takes up in the inventory? How exactly does that translate from 10 spaces to the 7 pengwings in the first quote, or is that wrong?

If I can only find out from my inventory, that means i'll need the fish in my containment first. But I'd like to make a bit of a plan which fish I'll be placing there and how many (if I have spare slots). Does anybody have a list of fish sizes?

You have the size here, x*y, so for instance each pengwing will add 2. As said, this is not a hard limit. You can put as many fish you want in it. It's just their breed limit.

But don't the fish die if I have too many?

Either way, if this list I made is right, it turns out that owning every fish will be exactly 54 slots anyway, so I'm good to go.
