New with Below Zero is if you had a beacon in your inventory, that gets dropped to mark your death site.
I went down to get diamonds near the rebreather area, I died while coming back up, and died almost right next to my seatruck. I spawned inside my seatruck to find none of my loot anywhere, I checked the entire place and found nothing. The loot I picked up was gone from the spawn point as well, so is this a bug orrrrrrr.
I have had dropped items sink to the bottom of the ravine. (Or even sink through the floor!) But I have also, sometimes, had at least some of them stay in place... Don't know if that qualifies as a bug?
You should drop any recently-acquired items at the location where you died, and if you died near the surface in deep water, if you get back there fast enough, you should find them floating down towards the seafloor. (If you die inside certain structures I think you can lose your recently-acquired items with no hope of recovery, but if you die in open water they should be there, at least initially.)
However, both BZ and the original game have problems with loose items dropping through the map (this seems to be a persistent Unity issue that has been difficult to fix), especially if the player is far away. So if the items hit the seabed before you got there, they may be Gone Forever.
