Death -> "lost some items"
so i was gathering some scrap metal at the "ship ruin" and of course my looting instinct overwrote my oxygen safety :steamfacepalm: i was prepared to reload until i saw "last time saved 40 minutes ago"... my next thought was " it would be great if the loot was dropped at the death location because finite resources -> countless deaths -> no resources left? " therefore i went back to my drowning place and tada there was a big pile of scrap metal (my loot which was taken away and it was definitely the place of my death because i died 20 m away from my seatruck and i respawned in it) .... was this just a bug or did the developers change it? either way i´m pretty happy :D

You drop items that you placed in inventory since the last time you exited a vehicle. This has been the same since subnautica 1. You keep items that you had already.
New with Below Zero is if you had a beacon in your inventory, that gets dropped to mark your death site.

I went down to get diamonds near the rebreather area, I died while coming back up, and died almost right next to my seatruck. I spawned inside my seatruck to find none of my loot anywhere, I checked the entire place and found nothing. The loot I picked up was gone from the spawn point as well, so is this a bug orrrrrrr.

I have had dropped items sink to the bottom of the ravine. (Or even sink through the floor!) But I have also, sometimes, had at least some of them stay in place... Don't know if that qualifies as a bug?

my experience with death (in game) shows that certain items (water, table coral) float longer than titanium and the items you will really miss (diamonds) sink quicker. i lost stuff in the deep twistys, i zipt to the beacon and saw just that. had to "level search", but got it all back. if it's a bug, it's a smart one. i'll keep it.

I think that if your character is swimming and you save, you will get loaded into your seatruck or base (whichever was last). It has happened to me before, I don't think its a bug. Also if you died before setting foot in a base, you will loose everything that you gained from that trip.

You should drop any recently-acquired items at the location where you died, and if you died near the surface in deep water, if you get back there fast enough, you should find them floating down towards the seafloor. (If you die inside certain structures I think you can lose your recently-acquired items with no hope of recovery, but if you die in open water they should be there, at least initially.)

However, both BZ and the original game have problems with loose items dropping through the map (this seems to be a persistent Unity issue that has been difficult to fix), especially if the player is far away. So if the items hit the seabed before you got there, they may be Gone Forever.
