To sum everything up, I feel like it could use some more significant story.
The pay off and rewards for completing our objectives is very unsatisfying.
We help Maida(she can kill Reapers with scraps of metal salvage and survive for weeks without fresh water and only lean leviathan meat and can go over 10 years without succumbing to the Khaara, but she needs us to disable the Radio Tower for her), and our reward is Preston's Plant and a few scannables, and a handful of purely cosmetic base items to scan. As something we do or find on our own this is fine, as a part of the stroyline and plot it's very weak and is a let down.
Not to mention disabling the Radio Tower does nothing for Maida's benefit, as they ALREADY know she's there, and they WILL be returning to the Planet, to arrest her, to repair the Radio Tower, and to ressume operations. It's a huge big wtf?
We help AL-AN and get him out of our mind. Which is either a net loss or gain depending on how annoyed you are with AL-AN. At some point he stops talking to us, but because of him Sea Monkeys conitnue to be useful to us.
Without AL-AN they go back to trying to gank our tools. And no more them bringing you Lead.
Later on we're supposed to meet up with him at the Phase gate, and our reward? A cinematic, a cut scene, dialogue, exposition, and he goes away. Outside of an "ending" that's a lame reward for going through all that work and no pay off.
We complete Sam's storyline? Huge let down. We learn it really was Sam's own negligence that got her and Parkov killed. Alterra didn't change the story or hide anything, they just worded it carefully for public relations protection. She did die due to negligence, she died in the act of sabotage. And thanks to her, a woman is without her husband and two young girls without their father.
Robin finds the cure for the Khaara that Sam made, somehow, despite being a Robotics specialist she cures the Khaara all on her own when the Precursors could not so whatever. She sabotages the Frozen Leviathan excavation site, and dies in the process (Again causing Parkov's death)
Not only does this do nothing, as A) We the player are able to find and enter the site with NO PROBLEM, and there's the Frozen Leviathan, and there's active Khaara samples. But B) when Alterra's crew comes back to the planet after meteor evacuation, they can just ressume work. So Robin takes it upon herself to administer the cure, somehow Sam could not do this? But we do. Whatever.
And a dead body without a beating heart or functioning circulatory system is injected with the cure and because of plot and writer's magic it cures the infection and we finish Sam's "work" with some cringe and stupid dialogue between AL-AN and Robin.
Our reward? Nothing. Text, cut scenes, and voice acting. That's it. It's stupid. None of it makes sense
So after completing all of the tasks we are given [gameplay] and reading all of the PDA's and seeing all the Cutscenes [lore, story] what are our rewards that we're given? What's our satisfaction? What did we actually do? What did we accomplish that no one else could have? How are we helping Maida? She can do what we did. And disabling the tower does nothing for her anyway.
How is us picking up the cure and administering it any kind of heroic task? Any person with any kind of decency would do this if they understood the circumstances. They could be dumb as a brick but if they can figure out "Khaara bad, this is cure for Khaara. Cure good. Cure the Khaara" they can figure out what hole to put it in on what machine and which button to push. And since Sam's sabotage failed to actually close up the cave entrance they can find it.
And AL-AN can just hop into anyone's mind that finds him. Or just die if the Sanctuary Power gives out before we the player finds him. His knowledge was shared amongst his people's collective hive mind anyway, so what's his death actually impacting? (Btw, Star Trek Borg much?)
It feels empty.
