Anyone want to tell me why this wasn't called Subzero?
I just feel like there was a missed opportunity there.

Devs didn't like the sound of Subnautica Subzero (or how it looked) so they went with Sunbnautica Below Zero.

That is basically it.

You spend most of your time below zero in both temperature and altitude.
Subzero does not really work when talking about altitude

I believe a dev said (in a much earlier thread) that they looked at "Subnautica: Subzero" but thought the alliteration was awkward.

Yep, pretty much that. Subzero on it's own sounded nice, but just didn't work well when combined with the Subnautica. The logo would have looked awkward, too.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the Subnautica: Subzero myself.
I do however find myself calling this game Subzero more than I do its actual name.

A name can only be protected if it is a new way to spell something.. For instance, Acecool is A School - it is Trademarked, automatically, by law since 1989 when I created it to serve as my philosophy in life.

There are a lot of people that say subzero temperatures and it is seen as a word. There wouldn't be a lawsuit, especially because the context is also there.

Mortal Kombat is protected because it isn't Mortal Combat, even though it is, technically, going for that vibe. But since they created their own way of saying it, then it can't be copied.

It's also why you see multiple games released with identical names over the years - names which can't be protected and why you don't see any other Mortal Kombat games, other than the original or by someone who owns the rights to it.

Trademarks, just like Copyrights, are automatic and you legally do not have to register it for you to be protected. For copyright, the protection is instant upon creation of something. Regardless, it is always best to mail yourself a copy of your work and never open it because a Postage Stamp / Date is legally admissible in court. If you can prove you were the first, you have protection.

Ideas aren't protected, in most cases. For instance, a game can't copyright having a scanner, physics gun, weapons, etc... But, if you create a unique, new algorithm to make shopping a better experience then it is possible to patent it. The code, regardless of the idea, still gets copyright protection so someone can't copy and paste the code and say it is theirs, or that they can use it because the idea isn't protected... Everyone has their own way to code things, and there will be collisions where some code will be very similar for certain situations but you can't plagiarize.
