Real people navigate by remebering certain landmarks and recognize them later on. I think this is how the devs want us to do it. In the original subnautica you could place and name beacons to find those landmarks more easily. A classical map would make navigation easier, no doubt, but I dont mind that this game takes a different approach to it.
ps.: You are free to take out a piece of paper yourself and map the virtual environmant though, as you would do if you would be actually there! ;)
Still if you want a map, spoilers ahead, the wiki already has one with all the upcoming surface biomes: https://subnautica-belowzero.fandom.com/wiki/Sector_Zero_Map
Small Team making game so game world map is small , like in subnautica devs. wants you to explore and discover staff.
I do not hide and I'm sure that many have used the online map for subnautics, see counter access, to find each other, which gives a signal of completeness and development. I'm not a kid anymore and I've been a beta tester for years, I just gave advice, the game is fantastic, excellent graphics and good game play.
Upload a map et voilá ...
If I remember correctly, the early version of the Sea Truck had that item too.
And to be honest, not having a HUD with all that information makes for a greater immersion, at least for me. It forces me to remember things, look at my surroundings for information and generally draws me in a lot more. That point in the game where you even forget that you have a HUD, that is the time where you really enjoy it the most by being completely captivated.
This is what i did in subnautica. i printed out a map with coordinates and with the lifepod 5 in the center. The outline of the Aurora and the two islands were also on it, but nothing else.
I used the beacons and drew circles with a compas to somewho triangulate positions on the map.
For my second playthrough, i installed the automap mod, but it is just half of the fun.
What? We've only been making paper maps of the world for thousands of years.
And now the entire world is mapped via satellite.
And we also use GPS mapping everywhere we go.
And we map out cave systems.
And we map the oceans floors.
And we map the skies.
And we map the weather.
We even map the moon and mars...
But we are not stranded, we are part of a research expeditions with a full orbital base as well as several research bases, plus the ability to drop equipment from space, so they can send me a scanner etc but not a map module? again to me its just a massive lazy plot hole, i dont NEED a map as i grew up playing ultima where you had to write EVERYTHING down, but if i can have one i will use it, Many exploration games have maps and it doesnt take away from exploring.
