do you know when?
It's not easy for any developer to cut pieces of their story, but when you can't answer fundamental questions about characters, like 'what does this character want out of this situation?' it's a good indication that the story is going in the wrong direction.
Making the necessary changes to the story now is a good sign that the developers are dedicated to the quality of the narrative, and building a final product that will be worthy of the name Subnautica.
In regards to your second point, there wasn't a lot of work except for some VO, that as Vaela pointed out, didn't make much narrative sense. The dialog was clunky and completely at odds with the tone they were trying to set.
Everything is subject to change, as you mentioned. It's a alpha. I think everyone needs to realize and stop with the whining and demanding that X feature be change or put back in. I'm not saying you're doing that, but the original poster you're referring to, as way a many others here on this forum.
Ultimately, this game needs to be completed. The devs can't keep flip-flopping over every little complaint. I feel we've had a lot of debate over this past summer about what this game is and what it should be. A lot of this stemmed from expectations of early backers of this being more of the same game. It was certainly marketed as such, with Unknown Worlds saying it started as an expansion to the OG and just grew in scope. They have only themselves to blame for the miscommunication there. They intentionally set out to make a different game and try new things and the time for reiterating is over. They need to stick to a vision and see it to release.
They sold us a game they hadn't gotten a proper story "beginning middle end" worked out for, basking in the success of a fanbase that could see little wrong with their current model.
Fast forward half a year, the luster has worn off, there really wasn't a "go to" for the endgame, & as a writer myself? Trust me, that's frustrating to the point it makes you not get out of bed in the morning....
So we are left with people saying "really? Shark Boy & Lava girl are what you have for us? ..Well, you're under contract...& so are we.." (if you don't know the tale? Google the interview.)
Many people are less than pleased with this.
..& rightfully so.
Add to it the wishy-washy pandering attempts in blogs & the like? & it comes down to:
Weak tea.
But we bought it, & we may as well see it through & figure out if we get a cautionary chicken little tale with break dancing teenagers, or a thoughtful treatise on first contact & survival.
I still have faith. *shrugs* But I have over nine hundred hours logged in their first game on Hardcore mode.
So I have some preconceived "This had better be this good..no worse..." rambling in my head as well....But for perspective? ..It was $20.00 guys.
The principal of what is occurring is more valuable to me than the loss of such funds to be sure.
I do agree it seems unfortunate for the existing writing, scripting, art and voice acting to go to waste - we'll have to see if they manage to recycle any of it.
