Where does thermal plant work?
I know build a plant near thermal vent would work perfectly, however those are hard to find and are all too deep. Do thermal spires, tree spires and purple vents good for building a thermal plant?

thermal vents are usually for deep only. Tree spires won't be good for building thermal plants. I don't think purple vents will work either. Thermal spires should work though. In low depth areas, I usually rely on solar panels though.

I think they were more of a remnant from the original game where there were more places to use them. In Below Zero I've only gotten them to work in the volcanos around the rocket island, so if you are not building a base in that vicinity, you are out of luck. They don't generate a ton of power, but it's much better then solar, it's constant, and doesn't require fuel like the biogenerator or nuke plant. You will most likely need to build the power posts too (I forget what they are called) to extend the power to your base.

Can be placed next to hot spot - like the geysers (around 49.C, several are located inside the gap terrain) in thermal spires.

There is a single vulcanic geyser on the left side, when you looking from the emergency base to the island. It's in the area with the cloudy waters below the surface. The first area with silver and gold. You can hear it better than see it.

You could extend a power line from there to you base if it isn't too far. The middle area has the problem with crocodiles or what these aggressive things are.

When facing rocket island and looking at the dock from a little bit out in the water, good lava vents are to the right not very far. I mounted 3 thermal plants there and got 82 heat, 750 power. Even stronger vents are father west, but I haven't tried to place any thermal plants there yet

I found an oddball spot in the upper crystal caverns biome (not very far in, only about 620m down) where right at the bottom near some strange looking gray spires the temperature spikes right to 90c. Working on building an outpost powered by 6 geotherm reactors around one of them. The temp only gets high right smack on the bottom though, you won't notice it unless you use the temp monitor on a Seatruck or PRAWN suit to find it.

I am wondering if the termperature is currently bugged, I used to get very high temps putting them right next to the thermals put now I'm only getting around 49C (yellow) O_o Early releases you used to a get a high output (green)

Those magma spewing geysers?. A good placement should read, i believe, up to 75c (been awhile). You can locate these from the noise or with equipment that searches.

You may place multiple at the same one.

The power relays actually go pretty far, far off screen far.
* First one needs to be kind of close to the solar/thermal.
* After that they go out pretty far.
* The connection line doesn't get cut off from terrain.
* Pretty sure each structure increases you power cap (every type). Solar is 150 cap, but x2 solar = 300 cap (I might have the number wrong).

Thermal plants are pretty damn strong. 100% power upkeep.
Nuclear is awesome, but eventually require replacements for the nuclear rods. (Probably done with the game before draining the 4 you put inside).
Bio isn't bad, depending what you feed it.
Solar is decent, but no power during night (wonder if luminescent plants power them).
You can mix them up, but not sure the order of drain (should be: Thermal > Solar > Bio > Nuclear, in my opinion).

Nuclear and Thermal are the best.

you can also use the geysers on the surface. My glacier base has 1 bio, 1 thermal and 1 solar. no problems recharging 4 batteries and 2 cells while crafting.

Yes, have been placing them directly around the heat areas, only been getting up around the 49C mark. Placed one directly in the centre while trying to not get burned as I noticed that it went up a few degrees in the prawn suit. Still in the yellow for the thermal plant -_-

@ GoldenOuroboros You are right, temperatures are fairly weird in this game, I can stand on one of the surface geysers (supposed to be 49 c) and be cozy and warm, step off and it is 2 c and I'm gonna die of hypothermia in a couple of minutes. The devs might be lizard people from a hot planet.
Thanks for all your reply. I have already discovered a perfect spot for building a thermal-powered base. It is located in a kelp zone beside the twisted bridge and thermal spires zone, very closed to the purple vent zone where the big leviathan prawn is. To find it, find that super big prawn at purple vent first, get past it straightly, across a short distance of thermal spires, then you will see a kelp zone, be sure to check in kelp cave for exact location of the lava open for you to decide base set up. You can clear a big zone for constructing your base by removing kelps with knife.

Below the seabed there is an active lava spawn where you can harness the thermal energy perfectly. It is NOT DEEP!!! I only needed to build one energy transmitter to deliver the unlimited thermal energy to my base. That lava open is capable of building 2 thermal plants side by side, with temperature of 75 C.

To me, I think that is the perfect base spot ever. Thermal energy, no hostile creatures, not really deep, lots of resources can be found in sea monkey bases in kelp cave, and sometimes sea monkeys will bring your free ores.

Van Sir, coords please.

Just put them in or right next to volcanoes under the rocket island. It gives you 50-60 c.
