Modding support?
Anyone know if there'll be modding support for Below Zero? There is a little bit for the base game, but it's not accessible on the Steam Workshop.

If there would be mods, I'm already imagining modders porting things between the two games, without question.

There most likely will be but not many mods during early access due to the constant updates

The reason it will be limited is because UWE wont provide a official mod kit, so everything has to be done differently now.

The reason there are so few mods, when OG Subnautica and BZ share mostly the same code base is because Below Zero came out the gate built in Unity 2018.

Original Subnautica might have that on the Experimental branch, but we're still for the update to the stable branch so mods can be updated for the new version.

Once that happens, there will be many mods that will work for both games pretty much out of the box without issue. But for now, I don't think anyone wants to maintain to completely separate code bases for the separate games.

Also this

There is no official mod support. The only reason why there are mods at all is because Unity is so easy to mess with.
And given that mods basically run their own arbitrary code, don't expect official mod support on either game any time soon.
We've basically been waiting almost a year since we got word from they UWE devs that they were interested in adding an official mod loader, but were hesitant to do so due to the liability.

I'm curious what liability that would be? So many games are modded nowadays I take it for granted.

( there may be a movie title in there)

A game developer can get caught up in a lawsuit against a modder who violated copyright, if the complainant claims the devs encouraged the modder to do so. Whether it was true or not, the dev now has to potentially waste time and money arguing in court that they didn't encourage the infringement. So by just going "nope, no workshop support", then they can reasonably argue that they aren't supporting modding in any way, and it's much harder to argue that they encouraged the modder. It doesn't stop modding, but it removes it as a legal argument.

For a bigger company with lawyers on retainer, probably not a big deal to open up to official modding support. But for smaller companies, it's a risk you have to consider. Companies like TableTop Simulator must have gone through some good lawyers to write up their terms to shield them from such accusations, because their system seems ripe for abuse.

It's rather ironic for a company that wouldn't exist if not for the modding scene to not support mods themselves.

The liability argument is a little moot in 2019. Modding isn't some new concept that the legal system can't wrap it's brain around. There are plenty of lawyers that specialize in technology, and TableTop Simulator is just one example out of thousands. There are far smaller studios and publishers that provide mod support.
