get into Polaris Crater without dying

I'm jumping into the crater to dig the treasure, but I keep dying the moment my feet touch the ground... How can I get there?

there is only one spot to jump down into it now. it's by the shovel icon and you must jump down on a crystal from there.

I've tried this a number of times and I keep dying each time. Is there something specific that you need to do besides falling down on the crystal there?

EDIT: managed to survive by entering the final level of the pit directly from the north. There's a huge crystal there that seems to save you if you fall on it.
