Ape Rock

I searched for a prior topic on this and couldn't find it, but does Ape Rock do anything, even with the Sledgehammer maxed out I can't figure out if I need the fist (don't have it yet) or if I am just old and I am missing something simple. The character seems to indicate when you get there that you need to clear out the rocks for entrance.
