The direct route between the starting area and launch pad to the east there are usually a couple of deer, just south of the road right before the launch pad are 3 wolves, apart from that, snow biome wolves/deer.
Steel:
Pipes and large switchboxes give some, particularly in powerplants or other industrial area, and bus stops, also drop steel. However, if you progress on the southern part of the map (follow the road from Greyhaven to the west), then you'll get tech to upgrade metal to higher variety. If you are having trouble finding the tech, don't worry, just try to get to the signal tower in that area, that will trigger a quest to guide you to it.
Also, there is an area locked behind poisonous gas. Get the gas mask, for which you need to go to the south of the desert (hot weather gear recommended), then right after you get through the gas, a quest triggers. Do that, and you'll unlock the hammer. Hammer smash real good, the only thing I found the hammer can't smash are big 18 wheeler trucks, and buses, but small minivans are even fair game for the hammer!
I use a machete on the telephone/power? poles they drop steel, electrics & wood. So walk the roads & whack them as you go.
Hides are easy, the tundra (cold) and desert areas are full of zombie wolves that drop them.
