Also learning to quickly draw your melee weapon helps when your opponent is too close to do anything. Plus sometimes narrowly bouncing side to side directly on your target while melee slashing can confuse their aim. (At least until they pull out their own melee weapon.)
There's no shame in tactical retreats, survival is more important than kills in this game.
Almost forgot, the Hunting Rifle is best to be reloaded manually to have a shorter delay after shooting which feels like a faster reload
