Have you tried fan remakes of Ultima 5 and 6 made using Dungeon Siege engine? They were pretty impressive if somewhat clunky (largely due to limitations of the engine) IMHO.
Ultima V: Lazarus[www.u5lazarus.com]
The Ultima 6 Project[u6project.com]
Unfortunately fan remakes/remasters are best you can hope for. EA that owns the franchise is notorious of hoarding them and then just sitting on them without ever letting anyone else touch the properties they own. And EA itself rarely if ever makes use of it's massive pile of old game IP's it owns.
It was one of my first game where I have spent many weeks playing with my old Amiga-1000.
Dragon Wars - you could actually import parties from Wizardry and Bard's Tale
Wizardry - The granddaddy of them all. Vector graphics, but it was still magic.
There was a fan remake of Maniac Mansion done using AGS. There may also be a Nintendo port.
I find the Bard's Tale trilogy much more difficult than either Phantasie or Wasteland.
As for Gold Box, I've only played the Dragonlance ones. They were pretty good, but I prefer Phantasie 3 and Wasteland.
i loved SSI game series.
i wish nikademus will be back!
Wizardry 1-5 would be neat too, but now that the trademark is owned by some mobile gamedev, that probably will never happen.
But yeah. A new engine would be great.
