Linux Mint 21.3
2.20 gigahertz Intel Core i5-5200U
16GB RAM (2x8GB)
500GB HDD
Nothing but the base Mint right now (Cinnamon, IIRC)
I haven't tried Proton yet, so this should be enlightening.
Steam with proton has made such a big difference to Linux Gaming. I play a lot of Windows games on my Linux system. While I run Bazzite, I have run Mint and had no problem running Windows games.
Also, if you don't know Linux, there are lots of "free" options (look at Distrowatch for a dizzying array of free OS versions and appliances) instead of Windows 11 after Windows 10 support is gone. And videos at YouTube and other places to help.
Plus, as you see above, great folks here in the Community to offer assistance.
Linux Mint is great for first time Linux users, especially when coming from Windows. You'll see a lot of "Gaming" distros, like Garuda or Bazzite, but honestly, all they offer is a gaming theme and Steam and other tools pre-installed.
You can pretty much do all that with Mint if you don't mind taking some time to install the appropriate apps. In some ways Bazzite is a little more than I need because I don't need some of the pre-installed tools.
Welcome to gaming on Linux.
