I didn’t expect this, but Phoenix Point (especially with Terror from the Void) gave me something I thought modern games had completely abandoned.

This is not a grind game. It doesn’t waste your time with artificial progression loops, endless farming, or “you’ll win eventually if you just keep playing” design. And honestly, that alone already sets it apart from most modern strategy titles.

What makes this game special is that it actually respects consequences.

You can fail. Not just tactically, but strategically. You can make decisions that spiral into real problems hours later. You can overextend, lose squads, misjudge priorities—and the game won’t quietly fix it for you behind the scenes. There are no safety nets disguised as “quality of life.” If things go wrong, they go wrong because of your decisions.

And that’s exactly why it feels so good.

With the Terror from the Void mod, the game becomes what I’d call a true old-school strategy experience. It’s harsh, but fair. It forces you to think ahead, manage logistics, and accept that not every campaign will succeed. Every choice matters, and that creates tension that most modern games completely lack.

Instead of:
“how long do I need to grind this?”

you’re constantly asking:
“can I actually survive this situation?”

That shift alone makes the game incredibly engaging.

It reminds me of the era when games didn’t try to constantly entertain you with repetition and rewards, but instead created systems where tension, risk, and meaningful decisions drive the experience.

If you’re tired of handholding, tired of grind-heavy design, and want a strategy game that actually challenges you and lets you fail—this is it.

Play it with Terror from the Void. That’s where it truly shines.

And beyond all that, the atmosphere, writing, effects, and grounded sci-fi world are genuinely immersive, with a story that actually feels meaningful instead of nonsense.

Accuracy worse than XCOM, no way to increase it other than equipment, boring skills and an overwatch system that makes you play like a horse with side blinders on. Ever hear of peripheral vision or turning your head? No? DIdn't think so. I think they tried to do too many things poorly than a few things well.

Having spent over 400 hours on Xcom2 this is fantastic. Love some of the differences to mechanisms like overwatch. Also feels like its taken some inspiration from FrostHaven for its map exploration.
