TFTV or Vanilla 1st?
Should I try to beat vanilla first to at least understand the basics?

Probably vanilla.
Vanilla with all DLCs installed is already pretty complicated, and then TFTV pushes it some more. Although i also heard that balance in TFTV is very different - many skills are drastically changed, so its almost a whole different game.
Still - would be good to learn the basics first before throwing oneself into the deep part of the pool.
And frankly, to learn the basics of movement, etc., I would recomnend vanilla with no DLC to start. Then, after comfortable, add TFTV and any other mods.

You'll love the game both ways. And the TFTV story is changed enough it will feel like a new game. But learning basic mechanics is easier without all the DLC and/or mods.

Always start a NEW game, you never played, in Vanilla Mode.
Based on my, More than 800 Hours playing time from the start of Phoenix Point onward... You want to learn how to play a game? Then you should watch High-Rated Videos, to get a good idea how to play, the DLC too.

We made TFTV purposefully so that it would be the best experience for first time PP players; we have a lot of these and generally the feedback it very positive, so I would say go for with TFTV for your first playthrough and come round our Discord if you need any help :)
Vorland and I disagree about some things; but overall TFTV is much better than vanilla.

I just happen to like trying all variations. The TFTV story is *far* better than original; but there's more than one way to tell any story.

I have to say I will never play vanilla again, not only because TFTV is a way better experience fixing ton of bugs, bringing QoL, improvements in every aspect of the game, but because, to me, vanilla balance is broken.

But if you want to really appreciate how good is the mod, play vanilla first, one run, and then TFTV, my 2 cents.

Excellent advice! People can then appreciate the change, i.e., from cheap hamburger to expensive steak...

I like to get achievements in games, will TFTV allow me to get them still?

Yep, you can still get the achievements.

Terror from the Void is the developer-recommended experience. The only big disadvantage is that some enemies from DLC's are frustrating to fight (namely the Myrmidion) but other than that I think the changes made are more than enough to make the experience a positive one.
I just started my first game with TFTV. I finished the first (tutorial) mission and then got a TFTV crash report after load to start the second mission. Time to remove this junk and try the vanilla...

Maybe you come over to our Discord #bug-reporting and drop your TFTV.log
That way we can fix that, checking your file.

Because that is not happening to everyone.

Yep, I just finished a ~70 hour TFTV playthrough this past weekend (with another ~30 hours in an aborted 'false start' game prior to that) and the only time I got an error report it was a known bug when mousing over the Oneiric Delirium bar during a mission (which was harmless, there was no actual crash so I just clicked OK and kept going).

Yes, and that was fixed in a hotfix yesterday.

It's not happening to *anyone* :) (at least first time I hear of this) but, yeah, if you get an error message just follow the instructions (i.e. come to our Discord and post your TFTV.log).
