Heavies are fine if used well, although having more than 2 seems an overkill.
Crossclassing into sniper is a fair game - ability to use the pistol alone is pretty nice. Then you just give them quislckshot and the "accuracy when far away" perk.
You can also go extra insane and steal the idea from The Pure - augment heavies with assault head and torso for that sweet +20% accuracy and then give them NJ Assault pants.
They look cool as ♥♥♥♥ in that combination, can still use mounted weapons and can walk decently far too, especially if you max out their speed.
Uh, have no idea what's going on in there. Surely it's the same?
For Heavies Berserkers are imo the best ones that use the Heavy class specifics the best, but Assaults and Technicians are all also nice. Even Infiltrator is actually pretty neat.
I have 2 heavies
2 snipers
2 assaults
2 berzerkers
You'll also still have Ignore Pain and Close Quarters Evade for bringing tankiness to the max.
And with the recent augmentation changes rocket legs may be on the table?
Will need to play another campaign to reevaluate. It's actually been I think 6 months now since I played a campaign where I was allowed to use heavies.
Now I can be casual abd just smash alien faces.
I see, so you're not even cross classing your snipers and heavies.. Whats your strategy behind that? Why not? And you cannot bring 9 soldiers and a vehicle into a mission

Better use for such team Thunderbird. This way you have space for 1 more soldier, it can be:
(assault\infiltrator\berserk or even heavy with good weapon proficy)\priest
So, answer for your question is "priest for both cases"
It is OK if all what you spend for clearing Citadel 4 phoenix grenade(4T, 40M).
