How is XP awarded?
Sometimes, the total XP awarded exceeds the total shown on the right. I assume it's split based on mission contribution but I never saw anything specifically shown. In the example below, considerably more XP was awarded than the mission allocation, but I don't know why. Thanks.

Common Sense would say "You get Extra Experience, for Rescuing Citizens, Allies, and especially for each Enemy Killed, in missions."

I might be wrong, long time that I haven't dealt with Vanilla, but I think this is because there must be a hidden mission objective (one that doesn't show up in the summary).

Re how XP are distributed, I wrote this a long time ago, but mostly still valid for Vanilla http://wiki.phoenixpoint.com/Character_Development#Experience_Points

XP comes from mission objectives. It is distributed according to a hidden "score" system for agents. Generally agents that do the most damage or score the most points will get the most XP. If a unit is at level 7 they will still get allocated XP on missions, which goes to waste.

There is not enough mission XP to level up your guys in a timely manner. Invest in training facilities and stack the hell out of them. A full base loaded with training can get units to level 7 in about a week of globe time.
