I don't like Festering Skies, so I haven't installed TFTV yet. "...swarms of myrmidons..." sounds to this cancer-survivor and casual gamer as amusing as having an extra week or six of chemo.
Other folks seem to have few or no issues. We all have different skill levels. And just because I don't like it does not make it bad.
I will try to explain. Base defense was totally irrelevant in vanilla, very few attacks and lot of time, also deployment trivial, bottleneck, set on fire and overwatch one corridor, done!
In TFTV you have to think further, you can't just expand and forget about Lairs, Citadels in range, because now you can suffer the consequences.
But, you have Security Stations providing more soldiers, garrison at base, did you build those?
Also in tactical, you can deploy your soldiers/vehicle in vehicle bay or entrance, you choose. And yes, there are strats, up to four in Etermes, less in lower dif. levels.
How do you counter? Well, you have three consoles, two of them next to vehicle bay, so activating it you damage a bit the energy generator but you prevent one strat triggering.
It's about tactics and preparation, and not easy at all, but not impossible.
Tried again, started on the elevator at upper level. Was much better but yes very hard.
You right Aguilar, much more challenging. Finally got them.
Yes, I have a lift and a security station, who helped alot because the mobs focused them for the first 2 turns so I had time to progress to the sentinel. As soon as we get the sentinel, of course it's easy to finish because it stops the reinforcements waves...
