You really shouldn't worry about it too much though. Food is very easy to acquire by other means. Trading alone is usually enough to keep a healthy supply.
And - as Phoenix Point - you have a very unique of producing food... From captured pandorans. NJ will give your some flak for it upon finishing the research as to how, but that's as far as consequences go.
And your soldiers eat it very slowly, so unless you hire every single soldier you see and keep 50+ people around - you're golden.
And a hint for the factions: don't bother too much with "siding" with any one of them specifically. Just act like you would act, don't sabotage / steal anything and do your job of destroying pandoran hives. Over time all 3 factions will warm up to you if you don't actively go out of your way to intimidate them.
Your main source of campaign income is trade. Spend that money on aircraft, a good trade can make 50-150 resources every few hours.
1 I thought I couldn't become someone's ally without attacking another faction. So without attacking another faction, it's possible? If so, how? As far as I remember we could never get above +49 (relationship) unless I attacked another faction.
2. is it that I have to be allied with a faction by the end of the game to finish it?
Yeah, I think so too.
Factions will react to variety of your actions in the world... But most importantly - they all react very positively to Phoenix Point destroying Pandoran Hives and defending their havens.
The bigger the hive, and the bigger the haven assault - the more they love you for getting it done.
You can literally do nothing but just explore world events, defend havens and destroy pandoran bases and it will eventually end up in all 3 factions considering you their friend.
Relationships with factions get stuck when they reach 24 / 49 / 74 %, as Bobucles above said.
To get past those milestones you usually must accept and complete a special quest from the faction in question. They will even contact you about it upon hitting the milestone, so you can't miss it.
While some of these missions MIGHT interact negatively with others factions - usually its not that bad. Definitely far less negativity than straight up sabotaging a haven.
So yeah. Don't bother with hit-jobs from Diplomacy window, just do your thing of saving the world and get those special requests done to get past the milestone. It'll be both enough and fine.
You don't have to be allied with any of the factions to get to the ending.
In fact - every faction has its' own unique ending.
Including your own Phoenix Point exclusive one - which ignores the ideals of the factions and tries to solve the pandoran question by... Other means.
