Weapon Upgrades?
Sure the factions give me different weapons, but the damage feels very similar? And virus dmg feels kinda meh tbh

The improvement is there, but it seems very minimal - unlike, for instance, XCOM II's progression in power. Of course, once you get Ancient weapons, then the equation changes, as those weapons are massively powerful.

Ahh ok, yeah this part of the game I find very underwhelming

Yeah, this one has been a common complaint - power progression is not as big as it was in XCOM, at least when it comes to basic weapons.

Your default gear is basically the worst, but not by a lot.

Synedrion gear is basically superior to yours in every way: more accurate, more ammo, and sniper deals 10 extra damage.

NJ gear is a side grade: they deal more damage ensuring armor penetration, but at the cost of accuracy and their AR deals less total damage than Syn's.
Their heavy gatling cannon is a direct upgrade to your TYR-II cannon, as the latter is weak as hell.

Anu are the only ones who produce melee weapons (very strong stuff).
They also produce shotguns. Their default shotgun deals notably more total damage than ours because of 2 extra pellets it shoots, but at the cost of accuracy and magazine size (not really an issue).

You won't really get upgrades to basic weapons until end game. It's mostly new special weapons like weird tools and mounted cannons.

As for virus: it's not a damage type that kills, but one that disables.
It saps target's WPs reducing its ability to cast abilities and eventually causing panic. It also makes it easier for Priests to do various shenanigans like mind control.
Most useful against very tanky targets that spend too much time on the field.
Virus damage is the one of the very few salvations from Scylla.
Of course, if you doing it right.

I find the game loses out in quite a few ways compared to Xcom, I thoroughly did not enjoy festering skies and corruption. I did really enjoy the lost mechanic and the nemesis in WoTC. I think there were alot of missed opportunities in this game.

Even the skills, in Xcom, each class had skill progressions that made them really unique to use in different situations. Here its... well .... meh? Idk just feels like they tried but it fell short, which is a shame. Potential is definitely there

I like Phoenix Point better; but the DLCs for XCOM II were better.
