Console for mac

I tried to get the console working for mac. For PC I found instructions to edit a .dll. For mac I only found (on reddit) a discussion to add a file autoexec.cfg composed by the single line
disable_console_access = false
This did not seem to do the trick, however. Anybody knows how to enable a console for macs?
