and it aint the first bit of overwatch ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ i've witnessed either..
To the OP: yes, overwatch in this game absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. You can only use it in a completely open field / corridor with no cover and PRAY that one of the enemies will come by.
However i do call weirdness on the enemy actually walking into the overwatch area as still taking a shot. Are you sure he did walk through the overwatch cone? Or did he took a step from behind a cover? What enemy was it, specifically?
edit: i see we have two different experiences.
I usually set overwatch at medium distances covering corners ar doorways and they work relaitvely fine.
and i think i figured out why his overwatch wouldn't work..... and it's bloody retarded to say the least.

pointing my mouse on the wall with the door there. MAKES THE DAMNED STUPID ASS CONE MOVE UPWARDS.
idk if the original frustration was worse. or the frustration i feel now seeing this...
edit: just placed the cone correctly by aiming my mouse at the floor in the hallway beyond. and it all worked perfectly.. jezus christ.
The cone takes some getting used to by getting a feel for how long it takes a soldier to get into position then fire, so it needs to be aimed beside obstructions instead of at them. I've had shots where my soldier has fired straight into a wall before the enemy ran out from behind it. At times it can work in my favor by moving through overwatch zones between nearby covers to "set it off" so other soldiers can move in.
If this even helped, it would be very cumbersome.
Cones must only cover completely open areas, or else. Which of course, makes it so much easier for enemies to not just... Walk through them.
Overwatch in this game exlusively exists to ambush corners or to catch enemies when they are moving out of cover. Nothing else. All other cases you're better off taking potshots, or using the remaining AP to move to a superior position.
