Dead or Alive and it's history with costumes and fanservice

I maked up my mind to open this thread some weeks ago due how people tend to take what "fanservice" is in this franchise. For that reason I think providing context is needed to understand why DOA 6 DID NOT tone down it's sexyness.

First of all, how did Team Ninja handle costumes older DOA games?. To answer this is necessary to understand that original releases and enhanced versions had different costumes. Enhanced versions obviously tend to have new costumes as incentive.

Both swimsuits and bunny costumes were DLC.

After looking at what older games did, we can conclude that fanservice in this series, for most revealing costumes, is:

-Cleavage / bra exposure
-Legs and waist exposure
-Panty shots

All three things at same time isn't required, some costumes only expose cleavage, others legs, others only panty shots. Also, not all costumes for each characters have to be revealing or sexy, some costumes are just cute, casual or fashion based.

Also after looking to all this historical data we can conclude that not all women have the same amount of "risk" in their costumes. Some characters like Tina tend of have bolder costumes than Kokoro.

It's mainly based in each character personality:

Highly seductive costumes in most cases: Christie, Tina, Lisa, Nyotengu, Honoka
Mix of revealing and cute / fashionable costumes: Kasumi, Ayane, Helena, Leifang
Mostly cute or casual costumes: Hitomi, Kokoro, Marie Rose, Mila

Now let's take a look at DOA 6, these are all costumes we saw in the last public demo (probably not all costumes in the final version):

Taking into account how Team Ninja managed costumes in older games and how they distributed them among all girls we have to ask ourselfves this question: Is DOA 6 toned down?

My answer is: NOT, it's not.

We have seen cleavage, we have seen legs/waist exposure, we have seen panty-shots and we have seen how they design each costume with each character personality in mind, matching their personality, being Christie, Tina, Lisa, Nyotengu and Honoka costumes the bolder costumes in the game.

To these facts we have to add semi transparent materials in some casual costumes, exposing their cleavage or bra, which add a extra sensual layer to characters like Hitomi, Kokoro, Marie Rose or Mila, something that DIDN'T happen in the most older games, where characters like Hitomi and Kokoro almost didn't had sexy and revealing costumes in DOA 3 and 4 respectively.

So: Dead or Alive 6 sexyness is objectively not toned down in comparison with older main games.

Nyotengu in doa 6 is already fanservice to me as is.

Some additional context, the claims of it being "toned down" originated from the journalists comparing DOA6 to DOAX3

DOAX3 is most delightfully obscene game they've made, as all the DOAX games usually are, so it's a false comparison to begin with because DOAX is a spin off, it's not a fighting game.

So if we compare Vanilla DOA5 with Vanilla DOA6, you'll see that nothing has been toned down.

Honestly, DOA6 will probably fail based on the simple fact its turning away from its roots, its a spectacle arcade game, not a complicated strategic fighter, I mean jesus do you remember how many shirts that had "Im a fighter" in the previous game? Anyway this isn't going to be the next evo game, and honestly the game probably won't sell well, things have been toned down to reach a more diverse audience or so they claimed, though my hunch its been toned down due to sony's recent strive for everything censored.

The whole '' I am a fighter '' thing was there in DoA5 too, it wasn't something that they began going on about in DoA6.

No No I said it was from the last game, it was like a way to try and lay a foundation of "This is a real fighting game" instead of this is a spectacle arcade fighter game, it was really sad when they had to go to such lengths to try and get their game recognized, but honestly? The spectacle is still there. They've said their aim for this game was "intense fighting entertainment". Things aren't toned down either, Providence has already discussed this literally above your post, but, that's in reference to DoAX3.

Some might retort that costume damage has been toned down but DoA 5 never had costume damage in the base game and it was so extreme due to it being a part of the Senran Kagura pack. Anyway, they've also said Its at the lowest possible level so they could sell the game in stores and it is possible to increase it
