Progress gating in this game sucks
I have put tons of hours to other roguelikes/-lites like Binding of Isaac, Dead cells and Enter the Gungeon and I absolutely love them, so i thought this game would be right up my alley. However gating player progress as hard as HyperParasite does feels really bad and I'm finding it difficult to start second run after I have died once, since I know I probably wont get any further if I don't luck out by finding a brain, a shop and enough cash early in the new area. Losing previous host body in a new area is a total disaster since the parasite's damage is ridiculously low and even your item effects, like dots, are disabled. Usually I love to run many hours of back to back runs in this kind of games but progress gating in this game just seems annoying and i am not able to enjoy it as much as I would like to.

To make things a bit better, player could be allowed to take control of one body type in each new are immediately when they enter it to stand even a small chance to progress.

Hey EDYSTERi, did you use the 'freezers' in the shop backroom to store host bodies and pick them up later? That's a good strategy to have some fresh host bodies in the next level ;)

I tend to agree, this game in my opinion needs better balancing. Maybe bigger levels , with more cash drops so that you buy power ups so you have a much better chance versus the boss. Plus slow down on the difficulty ramp, the twin boss fight is far too hard for the 1st level. During the boss fight, the spawns are locked, and I can't seem to find the type of mob during the level. So If I lose the skin I went into the boss fight with, I feel the parasite base damage to be too low. Good game concept, but the point is to make it a steady climb in difficulty and fun for the player. This game is just frustrating in its present form. I've played my fair fair of rogue-lites , from Enter the gungeon, to dead cells, to Binding of Isaac. Slow burn, not simple , just tone it down, or I don't see this title lasting too long. Enter the gungeon has a similar boss fight to this on the first level (the twin fight), but there was more room to dodge, the spawns were simple, and the drops found on the first level, preped you better for the fight.

Yeah freezers sure help if player ever gets to the shop and those bodies won't help at all if player loses the body during a room fight. It might be just my opinion tho but I would highly prefer to have some kind of base body in every area to give player a fighting chance. Of course this might speed up the progression but at least it wouldn't feel like it's as hard gated as it is now.

Been waiting for this game, but "locked" bodies killed it instantly for me. Like, WTH? You play as a parasite that can invade humans' bodies... except when you can't. This is just dumb. My first couple of runs ended on minibosses in the downtown since they just one-shot you and there is no way to get new body. The game is just plain frustrating, don't even want to start a new run.

And reading this it turns out you can't snatch people at all when you enter a new zone? Seriously? So glad I read this before my refund window closed.

PS. And what genius came up with the idea of non-rebindable effing "Enter" button to confirm things? Why can't we just use E?

So far I've come closest to at least taking out one of the Twins by spamming one of it with the Urban Fighter (molotov cocktails). But since we have no control over what bodies are available to possess, that was just one lucky instance.

But yeah, the Twins feel more like a mid-game or late-game boss, not something to indocrinate new players. :steamsad:

I love the game's concept, and think it's truly unique. But I just don't see the point of designing the early levels to tick off and frustrate new players like this. And in the end just keep replaying the same levels in the demo over and over.

Heck, just ONE of the Twins tanks would be a good first boss enemy imho.

The game is though, no doubt about that!

But there are many ways to simplify the run you're playing.

There are many items and skills to use, there are the "freezers" to store host bodies, there are upgrades to make both the Parasite and the host body stronger.

The game offers different strategies to beat it, you have only to find which is the best for you. :D

Have fun,

Hi all,

we've just implemented a new gameplay mode for the game: the Wrong Millennium mode.

Essentially there's no need to unlock characters, they're all available from the start.

If you don't like the unlocking mechanic at all, just give it a try. :steamhappy:

Best,

Hey hellem, one of the cool things in this game is that there's always more than a strategy to handle various situations (bosses included), and you have to find the right combination of host body, skills, items, etc.

If you find the bosses too difficult, we can share a hint or two!
