Other then that, as an artillery ship you should consider staying with your fleet until you get a bit more experienced. Problem is, in Recruit fleet when you play with a lot of other newbies, people tend to scatter off in all directions. So you have to deal with that for a while. Try to play around with your ship or try different ships. The one you picked is the middle-of-the-road arty. Maybe one of the other two suits you more.
As for the matchmaking, it works like this:
Recruit: T1 vs T2
Veteran: T3 vs. T4
Legendary: T4 vs T5
So everything works fine for you. T2 isn't really high level, it's what you will have as well in a couple games.
-always look alive around you, keep an eye on corvette or Light oberon cruiser that usually come to flank and gang (TAB to check enemy ship class).
-always check radar, check your six....check your team mate position... if you are only one left..run and regroup with your team unless you play corvette.
-always reserve half of your energy for emergency...
-stick to the cover...
Try to unlock your main ship ASAP and unlock its gear...(What is your main ship<<you need to figure it our yourself... play T2 match all class to find your style)
T3 Ship with full modded is better than T4 ship un-modded or Hero ship
If you play long enough, You will remember player name and their ship...you will know how they gonna come.
1) Get used to the maps in T1 - T2 for awhile. Veteran is a jump in difficulty. You'll be against players with many hundreds of hours, in organized squads that will take you to pieces. Then you'll be saying how the hell did that happen. It is just experience, teamwork, the right briefings, and the right mods.
1.1) Look through the tech tree and pick out some officer briefings you like the look of from T3/T4 Level up the lower tier ships that lead to those briefings you want, so you are making progress that will benefit you long term. While still staying in T1-T2 and learning the ropes.
2) T3+ energy will be much more important to manage well. In T1-T2 you can get away with going full shield, full damage and then just letting it recharge. This can lead you into bad habits, so learn to manage your energy, saving some in reserve for defense or attack. There will be times to expend it all to finish someone off or full shield/full engines to retreat to cover, you'll learn this with experience.
3) STAY IN A GROUP. I repeat. Stay in a group. You'll learn when to flank, push or break away, but to start with, stay in a group.
4) Try different ship classes. Some you will suck with, some you will do okay with and maybe 1 you will dominate others with.
5) Use cover. Go high when you want to tank, take damage, dodge starling nukes (in veteran) or use your missles lasers etc. Otherwise get used to going up and down behind cover, especially with dreds and destroyers.
6) Prioritize your fire. Call for fire on corvettes yoloing your team. Learn the quick chat commands. Take out artillery cruisers that are exposed out of cover before they wreck you. If you see a healer out of cover, focus fire on him.
7) Never go into battle without a tactical cruiser (healer) on your team. If something is shooting at the healer, kill it fast.
8) Further to point 2 as an example. Save some shield if you've got missiles, nukes, or a ram ship heading direct for you. Then engage it just at the right time.
9) More damage isn't always better. Sometimes the status effects are far superior to raw damage, depending on your target, team and loadout.
10) *Most of the time, dreadnoughts shouldn't be sitting at the back of the match. You are a tank, be a tank. There are a few builds this isn't true for, but even so I run long range dreds at times and you've still got to do your tanking or draw fire where you can.
That's a basic few points to get you started.
Work in a team. Cover each other. Protect the healers. Don't run 4 dreadnoughts in a team and wonder why you lost, or 4 of anything for that matter. (Except maybe destroyers).
That said, the starting (medium) destroyer is a great all-rounder. I strongly suggest focusing on that shipline to start with until you've got a good grasp of the flow of the game and can branch into more specialized shiplines. It's a very versatile ship that can do a lot of different things and is a lot more forgiving than the more specialized ones.
(If you find yourself frontlining a lot, you may want to branch into dreadnoughts. If you find yourself prefering to hang back and focus down wounded/priority ships, you'll probably want to branch into artillery. If you like to sneak around and catch isolated ships with their pants down, you'll probably want to branch into corvettes. If you like zone control/screening, you'll probably want to stick with medium/heavy destroyers.)
If you want to be mobile and still play an artillery ship, give the oberon artillery a try (the white ship tree). Those is rather fragile, but an effective speed tank and with cloak and power to engines flanking is a viable option.
However, as others already stated. Destroyers and corvettes might be worth a look for you, too.
Heck, you can even flank with a dreadnaught. With power to engines, the proper officer briefing and warp / afterburner they're pretty quick. Ships can fit a variety of roles depending on their fitting.
