So SOLs were generally larger than galleons and carried more cannons. But the comparison doesn’t end there.
Galleons were principally armed cargo ships. The cannons they carried were small, maybe 9 pounders at most. They were rigged to be able to be sailed efficiently with a small crew (about 150–180) as more crew meant more pay and more provisions. Their construction was also light. They weren’t all that manoeuverable.
SOLs on the other hand were not only larger but their cannons were larger, up to 42 pounders although 32 pounders were more usual. They were meant to be as fast as possible to run down enemy ships and their hulls were very heavily built and reinforced to stand up to enemy fire. They also had large crews, as many as 850 for HMS Victory.
So, even if you take an average SOL of 74 guns (about 1/3 of which would be 32 pounders) and a crew of say 650 and match it up with an average galleon of say 35 cannons, the largest which would be perhaps 12 pounders and a crew of 200, there’s no question that the SOL would win almost every time. It outguns the galleon. It’s guns are larger than the galleon. Its crew is larger than the galleon (a big factor when boarding). It outsails the galleon. It outmanoeuvers the galleon. Its hull is stronger than the galleon.
Wheres Frigate, Fluyt, Brig, Barque, Barquentine, Caravel, Corvette, Carrack, Galleass (row and sails, though in reality not that efficient, but a nice idea for a game such as Atlas), Man-of-war (duhhh).
Also all merchant ships that existed at that time (purely cargo and speed).
Anyway, where are all these?
Well thank you man. Had not seen this :) Is this a decent mod? Have almost no comments...
I am however interested in what models he has presented and if they make it into the game. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but it sounds a bit shady. Still, keeping an eye on it
Would love more ship types or just more variations. I'm currently using the windowed version mod. Hoping the devs might add more later, but who knows
This can not be true???? That would be horrible, a pirate game with very few types of ships. Also, iv'e seen in videos that its not that easy to theory craft the ships that exist due to weight and space limits, so eventually you will get bored from these few "basic" ships.. Also it means most ships will look and act the same end game.
Xebecs for cross wind travel, Frigate would just be a Brig with 2 gun decks and fore and aft chasers.
Corvette a refit Schooner with 6 guns on ea side and bow cannons.
Barks and Indiaman would be nice trade specific additions. Maybe even a Snow.
Why are SOLs not needed? I personally would love to see larger ships. more weight, more cannons.
No it doesnt? Blackwake also runs on Unreal Engine and has tons of ships
Problem here is that there's no gameplay on land. Gameplay on land is half the fun in this game, (due to low count and limitations of ship building id say even 70% of the fun). I also love FPS gameplay.
