Bowling Battle substory bug?

Just played this substory and for some reason, neither me nor the former pro could put any spin on our throws. I thought this might have indicated that he was trying to hustle me by tampering with the balls, but his AI seemed to think he was supposed to spin it and ended up throwing half his shots into the gutter. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had a bowling battle with Majima right before I played the substory, and I was also fully drunk at the time, if that matters.

Usually its the woman at the counter (the staff) who puts the balls in the gutter, not the prof guy
Dont think alcohol affects anything either. You should still be able to spin. Spinning is only allowed just before you bowl
